I have a non starting Fiesta Si. It is a 1.4 engine.

I think I have done almost everything to get the car to work. It did used to be a lil difficult to start a few times. But one morning last month it just refused to start, and has been like that since.

I checked a few other things; timing belt ok, fuses ok, changed running relays which were ok, connected fault code reader,no faults apart from missing gearbox vehicle speed sensor. Did a wiggle test for wires which appeared ok. I took the rocker cover off and observed valve operation on cranking which was ok.

I have changed a lot of parts without no success.
Changed the coilpack, (sparkplugs not old, only been in 5months), change the crankshaft position sensor from breakers - tested resistance and it was within value's

Today I changed the fuel filter and changed the fuel pump, removed the tank to do this. I had the spark plugs out, never got to put them back in. But I turned over the engine and would have thought I would smell fuel or seen it, but there wasnt any.

I am cluess at what is going on, especially as the engine gave no signs of failure any suggestions welcomed. :|

Me again, was sick so cudnt get to look back at the car.

However I went back at it today. THe problem lies with the ignition system somewhere.
The centre pin of the coil is getting the full voltage from the battery, the coil is brand new. I took the leads off, and they are not sparking at all.
I was a bit wary still over the scrapyard crank position sensor, so I went and buy one from Fords at £22. Although, it still made no difference, lol.
Only problem could be the ECU or the ignition module (if there is any fitted to this model) as I can not see an ignition module anywhere on the car. Anyone know where it is located?

I also checked the lead out at the crankshaft position sensor. If I pull the connector of the sensor and put the voltmeter across each pin, I get 0 volts. However, if I put it from either pin to an earth on the car (engine block), it would show 1.52 volts. Is this reading too low, should it be around 12 volts?

The ECU has the code

94FB-12A650-DC
EEC-IV
FIZZ

No module anywhere in sight, only ECU, and I have traced back the wiring.

I finally at flippin last have the car working.

I changed the ECU, nothing much happened, only now I can smell fuel more. The sparkplugs were producing a weak spark now, previously the other ECU it wasnt sparking.

I went and buy a set of new ignition leads, still no avial. Last resort before taking the sledge hammer to the car. I went out and buy some spark plugs. Some decent Ford Motorcraft ones. I also bought a ignition lead spark plug tester light, connected it up to the old plugs on the engine and not all of them were flashing.
Put the new plugs on the testers and leads, but not into the engine and they were all sparking and lights flashing.
Take out the old plugs (not that old, they have only had 3 months use and not much miles to them!) and they were covered in fuel - this wasnt happening previously with the other ECU.
THe only one that appeared to have been working was number 1 plug, which I changed a few weeks ago, due to the previous one breaking in the cylinder head.
After fitting the new plugs in, leads on, fired it up, it hesitated then started to run, AT LAST!!!

I am pissed off, as I have spent a lot of money, not to mention time, doing this car; and for what reason, because the prats at the motor facts supplied me the wrong spark plugs.

When I went back to them about it saying that it was the wrong type from what I saw in the Haynes manual, they were like it doesnt matter, it shows in their book that the 1.4 and the HCS engine has the same plugs (they supplies me HCS plugs). They were bollocking saying, that even if it were the wrong type iit would still run but weak.
But no I know better that,it DOES matter, because they would burn themselfs out and last a bare 3 months with the wrong ones in.
They gave me Champion RS9YCC which Haynes lists for HCS engines.
Haynes list RC7YCC4 for the 1.4 PTE, which I asked them for and they told me that it was wrong.

Needless to say this time I went elsewhere to a Ford specialist that supplies mainly Ford parts.

In the end, I believe the wrong plugs partly damaged my old ECU. And spent £30 fuel pump, £50 ECU, £40 ignition coil pack, £10 spark plugs, £15 ignition leads, £3 fuel filter, £10 used crank sensor, £22 new crank sensor. Total of £180 :x
