MG Maestro Turbo. Faster than any stinking Ford RS.

Didn't expect that now did you?

EG//EK4 Civic VTi would be a good choice as they're both quick, well balanced and very reliable cars. The Del Sol is virtually the same car, minus some of the interior space. The Starlet Turbo would just about be the quickest thing in your list, but also it's import and we all know they're slap you hard for the insurance on that.

Corsas handle teribly, so don't expect to go around corners quickly. Clio Williams is in the top 3 quickest things in your list, but the sensible choice is a Williams 3, which are still getting on in age, watch out for crappy Renauly build quality and rust. Engines are very tuneable though and strong if looked after. Lots of fun, and i mean lots of fun to be had here.

R5 is one of my fave cars ever, but frankly they're a steaming pile. Saxo VTR would be too slow and you'd prob get bored, but very cheap to run and insure. Rallye is a great car. If you want a drivers car for under £2.5k you'd be hard pushed to do better than an S1 Rallye. S2's are not as hardcore but share upgraded equipment with the GTI. GTI is a good drivers car, not loads of power, but very chuckable and hilarious to drive.

I refuse to comment on the Fords you've mentioned other than rust, rust, rust and enjoy fixing them. The Golfs are overweight now and underpowered, but the Mk2 16v's are excellent cars. G60 Golfs aren't worth the premium they fetch, same for the Rallyes.

My opinions on them :)

EG or EK Civic VTi. Virtually the same car.

Image

This is an EK series Civic. 95-00. Comes with the B16A2 Honda engine. A total screamer. For an EK you're looking around £2500-4000 for one. Engine: 160 hp @ 7800 rpm & 113 ft·lbf @ 7300 rpm.

Image

This is an EG Civic. 91-95 I think.

For an EG you're looking around £1500-3000 really. You're looking at 158 hp @ 7800 rpm & 116 ft·lbf @ 7300 rpm with a redline round 8600rpm. With Hondas you can pretty much dissmiss the mileage and just buy on the general condition of the car. If the bodywork and interior is tatty, then chances are the engine will be crappy. Engine will easily last up to 200k. My friends CRX (which uses the same engine) is on over 140k and is still rock solid and loves being raced to the redline.

Tuning on them is fairly straightforward. Just rob bits of the EK9 Civic Type-R which comes with the B16C engine. Things like the cams, the head, followers, lifters, exhaust manifold, inlet manifold can all be lifted from a Type-R for more power. Baring in mind the 1.6 Type-R is 187bhp from the 1.6 :)

For easy power you drop the B16 engine and put in the B18 from the DC2 Integra. You're now tramming along with 200bhp under your bonnet, all normally aspirated and lots of revs.
