as said above, clean your maf first with a can of brake cleaner or carb cleaner, if this fixes your fault good.

I think the operation can be checked by unplugging it, try unplugging and leaving unplugged for a couple of days see if it makes any difference (obviously car will overfuel during this period).

If you notice a difference the maf is either sending faulty signals to the ecu or is intermittently breaking down.

Scrapyard isnt really ideal as the cars sit about for a long long time, get all sorts in there, perhaps a breakers yard / eBay would be better?
