Hi

My fiesta blew the hose which connects the water tank to the radiator and the main engine block. Now the Fan doesnt cut in, the water boils erratically, the thermostat only works when it wants to and the temperature gauge hits the roof! I was just wondering if anyone knows how i can get the fan working, as the fuse hasnt blown. Also, does anybody know the importance of antifreeze, as i only filled it with water.

Possibly the most mixed up question ever but:

- How do you know the thermostat is working if the fan isn't cutting in?
- If the thermostat is broken, the fan wont cut in, therefore the fuse can be fine as as far as the fan is concerned, it's not hot yet.
- If the thermostat isn't opening, then no water will flow to the radiator therefore it's bound to get hot isn't it?
- How long did you drive without any water in it after it had blown the hose? Chances are you've blown the head gasket if it's any length of time.
- Antifreeze not only allows the water to stay in it's liquid state well below the natural freezing point of water but allows it to run much hotter than the boiling point of water. I think naturally your car runs around 90-120degrees, so antifreeze is essential to the cooling system of your engine.

Thirdly, antifreeze doesn't just stop your engine cracking from frozen water expanding, it acts as a coolant when it's warm. So, first things first, drain all the water out, get some antifreeze mixed up with water (50-50 mix usually), then stick that in and see how it goes then. Check all the wiring to the fan while you're there too Try not to drive the car in this waaaaarm weather until you have got the coolant in there!

right, a few things. The thermostat may not be working properly, but is allowing water through.apologies for the most mixed up question ever. im not the most organised person. Thanks for the replies and sorry for using the wrong forum. I wanted to recieve a quick reply so posted it here. And the last thing, ive got a push bike, but thats also fooked!

Cheers for that luke, everything was running fine until last nite when a deer decided to run into my front wing and then sod off again. Now i need a new front wing, foglight, foglight casing, bonnet and everything else. not too bad though, while that goes in im gonna get the boot smoothed, the rust on the drivers side done, the spoiler colour coded, have it de locked and also thinkin about a turbo or somethin. if any1 has a foglight surround it would be very much appreciated, bought of course!
