it's back on the road again! basically after falling out with the 1.25 for being a pita and the exhaust breaking off at the rear silencer, on the m6, on the way to a meeting, in the pissing rain on Tuesday. I re-insured it Wednesday before work and in true fiesta fashion it through it's toys out of the pram and wouldn't start without getting underneath and giving the trigger wire for the starter a wiggle.

so at the moment my "off the road for winter" project it's back on the road looking like a total nail. The os/r wheel is from a fiesta freestyle as the tyre that was on there developed a bulge in the tread while i was on the motorway (really starting to think i should avoid the m6) and wore through to the cords as it lost pressure. that's what the tyre place has to say anyway.

I still need to sort the exhaust out as it still sits down where it bends around to go into the middle silencer.

various bits and pieces need to be tidied where i fitted the new 4 branch and it needs sealing as it's blowing where the mani goes into the flexi pipe.

It's been a long time so i thought an update was in order. the plan over the winter was to use the mk4 fiesta i acquired when i sold my old zs which would allow me to work on the 2i whilst it was off the road.

However like all well layed out plans there was still a few problems. so the 2i came off the road last october and sat on the drive way getting left untouched due to the fact that when i came home from work it was far to dark to work on it and at the risk of sounding like a girl, i couldn't be bothered with the cold. So i carried on enjoying bobbling about in a car that to be honest i didn't really really care that much about until one night i was travelling down the m6 on the way to a seminar, with a bit Maria Carey singing about all she wanted for Christmas was me blasting out of the mighty standard system ( well it was nearly Christmas and i was feeling festive) when i thought to myself "that exhaust has got a bit loud all of a sudden".

Anyhow to cut short what is already a rather long and pointless story shorter, The exhaust had fallen off and i was faced with a dilemma. Replace the catback on the 1.25 or put the 2i back on the road. given that i decided having the mk3 off the road parked up on the drive next to some grass and vegetation, all stuff which helps to make old fords rust. plus the fact that i missed driving the thing. So it came back on the road and i made a game of trying to avoid the gritters.

So what have i actually done too it? Well before it came off the road it was fitted with a Ashley four branch which really does help it higher up the revs.

Over the Christmas break the starter motor decided to die, which helped me practice my single handed bump starting technique. The new starter was of the shorter cvh variant which means that their is more clearance between the body of the starter motor and the exhaust manifold. The exhaust is on the front of the head on a zetec e rather than being on the rear like a zetec se motor.

On a mission down to surrey to meet a member of fiestaturbo.com which will help me find my missing 200cc and get some more power under that vented bonnet the heat from traveling a good 170 miles each way melted the trigger wire off the original starter before i fitted the new one. that's how close they used to be.

On another jaunt to collect parts this year, with all but the drivers seat removed for space to fit a zetec s axle in the back. the alternator decided to die as i got off the m6 to get on the 56 to widnes. So that was replaced and then replaced again as the new alternator started discharging when the key was off.

There is more to come but for now that will do as i am boring myself never mind anyone who else has gotten this far.

As Dave said the other week i have now bought back the rst popouts that i sold too him ever so long ago. (i like to think he was storing them for me whilst i had a mk5 moment)

Anyhow as in my last update i never really said what i have actually been up to i thought i would continue on a bit.

On the mods front I have replaced the ye olde mk3 2i beam with a mk5 zs item which is practically brand new coming from a w reg car compared to it's 20 year old counterpart. Parts replaced when fitting the new beam: Rear brake flexi hoses, wheel cylinders, handbrake cable and the axle bushes were hacked out and replaced with powerflex versions. Still too be replaced are the wheel bearings and brake shoes.

Then i moved onto the front and went a bit mad As the car is far too low It looks great but as we all know it kills mk3 fiesta suspension arm bushes. In my case the bushes had been nuked, they were pretty much twisted 45 degrees out of the arm. Removal of the old arms led too one of the suspension arm bolts shearing off (i dont half miss the oxy acetylene bottles when working at home :( ). So Ringing around the local motor factors it seemed to be that the bolts i needed were unavailable. After getting many responses along the lines of "sorry mate your going to have to go to ford I'm afraid". i managed to locate a suspension arm fitting kit that contained every pinch bolt for fitting all 90's fords i could crack on.

Next on the list was the nearside track rod end boot had all cracked away and was in a bad way. As the suspension arms had been fitted and i needed to free off the track rods on both sides anyway to track it again i thought i may as well replace both track rot ends while i'm at it.

The front anti roll bar mounting bush on the ns had about 6-7 mm of play in it so a set of standard rubber bushes were fitted to replace the old standard original ford items. The drop links were replaced on both sides too as these had been bent. my theory on this is that because the car has been lowered the arb is running out of travel and the drop links are taking the impact.

So after all this lot the car should be really tight and be like a tram on rails right? NO, It's bloody awful!

The tracking is so far out if you let go of the steering wheel you spear across the road and it scrubs on every arch. i think there is even more camber too now. The plan now is to replace the aged dampers with some oe spec ones and the massive drop springs with some more subtle high quality ones which should raise the car a good 20 mm all around as it is now. then i need too remove the Ashley 4 branch for the mot and i will have a go at tweaking the tracking a little more on the drive so its safer to drive to work for the mot.

Also this evening i was having a play around in my tailgate until it went dark trying to make the bootpop work properly so it has the power to undo the latch, At the moment my list of possibilities are, bad positive feed, bad earth as the tailgate is as rotten as a pear or even though the solenoid works on the bench (in the engine bay across battery terminals) it might be just too weak when it actually has to do work ie pull a latch.

I hope it will be sorted when the springs and dampers are replaced. I had another go at the bootpop again tonight and now it works. Turns out the switch is a little bit fubared inside as when you bridge the two connections on the loom that come through the centre console it pops open like a good un'.

So now we are one step closer too getting it mot'ed and i dont have to crawl through the back of the car too open the boot. Next little wiring project on the list is too find the pin outs for my ecu and a DEEP ecu

It's not too bad now still alot too do, but im not going to write an essay as it wont help me get anywhere and i will just end up looking a spanner for not doing stuff i said i was going too.

Talking off which i got on the phone to one of our suppliers at work about special ordering a set of H&R lowering springs and 4 new dampers from bilstien!

just thought i would leave you with a few random pictures taken during random points of faffing.

jacked up in the air with the zs beam on after being bleed up.
Image

Only 1 1/2" off the floor with the back jacked up. hella rake yo! or something equally "scene"
Image

The trusty old axle was in a bad way, the rear brakes needed sorting out, needed new wheel bearings and the back plates of the drums were rotten. The ARB has been sold on to a great guy on zsoc who will be making good use of it by fitting it too a zs axle. I cant personally wait too see the result.

A rather small collection of suspension componants.

and lastly beauty and the beast, but which one is which?

Going to make this short as I am using my phone and I'm too tight to get tapatalk. I have stripped the plastics and trim panels from around the Windows so they can be cleaned. Also to allow me to fit the rst popouts.

I still havnt got a full set of shocks and springs yet though as the shocks were special order and only 2 have turned up with euro at the moment
