Wish you'd put the TL:DR on the top. Ended up reading more than needed.

Spray it pink.

As per new title, I went to replace the broken spring on the other side today and the top thread was spinning around freely, thinking it was the piston rotating with it, I thought nothing of it as that's what it does..

So I removed the shock, and then went to remove the retaining nut which holds down the bearing and spring cup ect and noticed the piston wasn't spinning around with the thread..

Yep, the other side has broken in exactly the same place. But this is down to the broken spring and putting extra forces on the thead.

So the other shock will now be sent to AVO for a rebuilt with a new piston/damper unit. Then when it gets back, or even before then, I will go collect another new front spring so they are both new and there is less chance of that happening to the other newly refurbished side.

TL;DR version: Broken spring = broken coilover top thread, sending to avo, getting another new spring too.

Picture of broken shock and new spring vs snapped one.

Same price as I got quoted last time. Might be on the previous page. Which was free parts, labour cost at £25 + vat (i think), plus postage back to me. How much the piston would be on its own I don't know.

For reference too, my memory says that to have the damping adjustment knobs on the rear shocks replaced, its something like £15 (probably need to at VAT on that) and then potage costs. I've got an email somewhere but cba to look for it.

Small update..

Got the shock back from AVO, Nigel did it free of charge again and got it sent back to me for free. I had a funny 5 minutes putting it back together yesterday and had the spring cup and top bearing the wrong way around so it didn't go back together properly and leave me enough thread - I blame the lack of sleep the night before

So I took the other side off, and then realised my mistake, then put both sides on and got the car back on 4 wheels.

I'll be popping down to Faulkner springs again in the week to collect another front coil spring so both are the same. I think they might need a couple of weeks to settle slightly, or I will just wind the coilovers down a bit more. It's only about half an inch higher, not sure, haven't actually measured it yet.

Also, I believe I need new gearbox mounts - again/still. Had problems with them causing vibrations - one lot ripped apart completely in the past. It seems to happen when you go around right hand bends - you get a vibration through the car. I thought it was the shock and spring breakage combo, but it's still there a bit. So gearbox mounts will be next on the list to swap. I will check and double check everything else connected to the steering, suspension and engine mounts are tight while I am at it too.

TL;DR version: Shock back, gearbox mounts probably need replacing and collecting another new spring for other side.

They are expensive :( and I would only want the road going versions because it'll vibrate like a cunt otherwise lol

Sup fellow forumers.

What have I done recently, pretty much naff all apart from moan. Well there's a whole load more of that to come!

I got some vibra technic mounts for the gearbox hoping that would be the last of my shitty vibration problems. But nope! They are still there and worse now too :(

Basically going around right hand bends is the worse, you can feel vibrations all through the car, as if there is pressure being put somewhere, like on a bearing or something and it's vibrating in its housing. But I've also noticed it accelerating away hard.

So I'm putting it down to either a bearing, CV joint or the diff in the gearbox. If anyone wants to chuck suggestions at me as to what it could be, go for it.

Anyway, idle vibrations - cannot stand them lol. But the car handles even more like a go kart now, so that's a win lol.

I'd say CV joint as the 106 has the same issue. Had it turning both ways, had to change one of them for the MOT knowing the otherside would scrape through and what do you know, turning left and no knocking/clunking anymore, turning right, still a faint clunking.

You will get used to the vibrations but it is one of them few mods that really does make the car less bearable as a daily, yet makes a big difference when pushing it IMO! :D

Good work I say!
