Well this just happened...

Funny story actually! Basically there was a load of annoying little flies on the windscreen while I was sitting on the inside of the car... I banged it to get them off aaaaaaaaaaand thats when it cracked.

Although you can't see it, it goes all the way down to the wiper too.

I'm mega pissed off at the moment.

Can't be arsed with bonding a mk5 one in. Might as well just get a mk3 one and slip it in. It'll save loads of hassle.

Not too bad a price if the screen itself is perfect (apart from a damn good clean). I got a no scratch screen from a scrappy and the loom for something like £30, but don't forget that was self removal!

But I should add that a heated screen is AWESOME. Just make sure your alternator is up to the job though. Mine screams in pain...

Well there is apparently a small chip in it, so i'll see how bad it is and if it is just really minor which you cant notice I'll probably get it. Mine had a couple of chips in it so meh. I'll haggle. My alternator is more than up for the job of a pissy heated screen lol

Famous last words before you stall it because it takes that much power!

30 amps isnt that much power, well compared to other things it is perhaps, but meh, I can run subs, heaters, rear screen de-mist and lights ect all at the same time with no problem so a front screen should be ok  You might need to check the alternator and/or battery is working properly if it screams in pain.

Anyway, on a possitive note, I am getting a heated windscreen to replace mine at some point this week, so thats a bonus. I'll hopefully get that in by the weekend and I MIGHT be going to ford fair in this again now.

Just need to sort a few things out first :)

Soooooooo, as you may have seen the windscreen lost a battle with myself

I went to Southampton to get another one as it was the closest one I could lay my hands on, plus, it's heated which is always a bonus! It came with the loom and what not too, but its from a mk3, which means I need to either get a mk3.5 loom or chop into the loom somewhere else and wire it in. For now I have left it so I dont piss anything else up just before ford fair

Anyway, this is the screen. It came with a boy racer sun strip - which was on there because it was a track car project.

Image

Then I had to remove the old one. That was fucking hilarous! As I was breaking the seal nice and gently with a screwdriver it decided to crack on the other corner

Started with the one original crack...

Image

And then it cracked on the other corner...

Image

Aaaand then it ended up like this  ....

Image
Image

Side by side:

Image

No windscreen oooo...

Image

Then I laid the new screen on to see what it would look like with the sun strip...

Image

Then fitted it and removed the sun strip:

Made a random video of the cracks getting bigger and bigger while breaking the seal too

The reference about getting a professional to do it was about if you wanted to put the screen back in, because how people manage not to break it is a mystery after my attempt of removing it

Looking good. That sun strip almost worked didn't it?

From my experience with screens, if you want to keep it you should buy or source another rubber seal (maybe from a screen already broken in a scrappy) and then just cut off the existing one.

I did at first, but I took it for a quick drive up around the close to adjust the rear view mirror and it annoyed me in about 10 seconds. The visability is worse with it, plus it reflects my hands on the steering wheel so it kept catching my attention and annoying me. It is much deeper into the screen than you realise too!
