Just seen Asda massif doing some mineral oil. About to do a change of oil and with the cost of this being the cheapest at the moment along with 126 thousand miles on the engine I was wondering if it'd be a good idea to use this for 500-1000 miles to help clear the engine out before putting synthetic back in?

No, simple as that.

Basically you will end up damaging the engine. Stick with fully synth stuff. At the end of the day would you rather pay an extra few quid for a bit of oil or an extra few hundred for an engine?

Basically the downside to mineral oil is that it just natrual oil and has no addatives to prevent engine wear ect. 99.9% of cars run on fully synth now. Slightly older cars run on semi.

The benefit of synthetic oil that is it (i think) mainly man made and has addatives and stuff in it to reduce friction, burning, build up of crud and many other things. Mineral oil doesn't have any addatives, so engine wear is more likely to take place - especially at start up where the engine is at is most vulnerable. Synthetic is designed to stick together like a constant film, where as mineral will get pushed out the way... if that makes sense? There is a really good article somewhere on the net about both of them, ill try find it later.

Mineral oil is mainly only used on old engines - like back in the carb days. So it still has its uses.

Mineral oil is also used on freshly built engines. I had to use it when I rebuilt my bottom end, it helps everything bed in as it's not as refined as you say, and essentially has mild abrasive properties. Synthetic oils do not break down as much as mineral oils, and also flow better at lower temps, helping to protect your engine for longer period.

Don't use mineral oil in yours. There's no need.
