Snapped?

2 reasons: 1) mega cheap shit.. 2) not fitted properly.

I take it that it snapped at the nipple?

It snapped halfway down again. It's done it once at the nipple but I should have noticed from the heavy steering (I don't know why it gets heavy in the days before snapping).

Every other idea is being postponed, fitting a clutch cable today then next week I'm converting the system over to hydraulic. Can't keep doing this every few months.

Heavy steering when it snaps? That strange!

What make cables are you using?

Well, leading up to it snapping yeah. Brand wise I think I've used everything now.

So what can cause frequent cable snaps? Thing is with a new cable it's light as hell!

That's the pedal end where it snapped. The other end looks decent actually.

VERY strange for it to snap there.

It couldn't have been installed correctly for it to snap there. The breakage looks clean as opposed to frayed and stressed.

But they usually break due to friction and snagging on the rubber block where the nipple does into the block. Copper crease can help it not break. But thats no use to where it broke on yours.

Yeah I agree it is strange to snap there, but it was put in properly (I'm getting used to it).

Also while I was there I started preparing the car for converting to hydraulic.

Up he goes and off comes the MAF and cone filter.

Image

Next, the bracket that holds the standard airbox needs taking out as where it holds the inlet feed, it gets in the way of the plans...

Image

Image

Image

That's all the bolts needed to undo it, plus three holding the two parts of it together.

And out it is:

Image

Always got to have that random foot shot.

Then the bracket for the slave cylinder will go on this bolt (extended new bolt of course):

Image

Then a little supporting bolt here:

Image

And here is the 'empty' area:

It will be interesting to see it converted to hydraulic.

Hope it goes well :)

Well I can get a hydraulic box from the scrapyard for 10-15 quid, then it's a case of finding a car (Honda Prelude was used in the original escort write-up I found) with a slave cylinder which might be 5-10. I have the copper pipe, just need a hole saw and a couple of steering rack to servo brackets from a fiesta or escort.

Well, here we go:

Image

I know it's not 'quality' but it only has to last a week!

And also:

Image

Going to fully recondition the front calipers. So proper seals and also the rewind tool to help push the caliper in straight. That's next week though when the car isn't going to be used for two days.

Want me to take pics of how to easily swap a clutch cable? Lol

Yeah I know it's shit, but as long as it lasts until Thursday morning I'll be happy. Better than paying Ford 80 quid for one.

I'd never buy a 'genuine ford' one, its just basically a QH one labelled up as ford and then they pocket £70 odd profit.

As long as it lasts for the week then its all good!

Here we go with the little guide:

With the old one removed (as you usually have it very easy with it snapping on our beloved Fezzies!) you just need to raise one wheel on the car like so:

Image

Shove the new cable in like so:

Image

It needs to point towards the oil filter along the brake bar. Too difficult to take a quick picture.

Push the lever end through the hole on the gearbox and connect up the end into the lever.

Image

Next get under the car.

Looking up at the bulkhead you'll see this:

Image

Fiddle with the end of the clutch cable so it goes into the hole like so:

Image

Then get into the car (push the drivers seat all the way back, it helps) and then look under the dash at the top of the clutch pedal.

See the quadrant at the top?

Image

It's actually easier to not use tools such as a screwdriver here. Feel around and you'll feel the other end of the cable where it's come though the bulkhead. Pull on it a little and move it to the side a touch, then PUSH that bloody quadrant back and over. It's awkward but it's doable in the right position, then hook the cable over the end and under the stays.

Image

And done. Takes around ten minutes when you fight with it, because it is fiddly.

I've never bothered jacking the car up, don't see any need to do that personally. And I usually put the nipple in the gearbox leaver last, makes life easier getting it into the pedal without any fuss :)
