For those who have a garage, shed or whatever...

How much space being indoors would you like or do you have in front of the car? How high should a shed be for a spit with a fiesta?

I'm asking because I'm designing a shed/garage/workspace for the new house I'm moving into and I'd like to keep things as small as possible to keep costs down. So let me know your experiences, size of your areas etc!

My fiesta on a spit sat about 6 foot high on its side.

How high was the car off the floor so it cleared the floor on rotation? I know the width of the fiesta is around 1.62 metres but I don't know if that's with mirrors or not lol.

On engine changes, what area would you prefer in front of the car to work in, assuming you're completely enclosed by the building with doors shut?

How wide is a fez with the doors open as well, lol!

You really want as much space as possible. Find out the measurements of a standard uk garage then build it a few ft bigger than that? Especially width wise.

your normally resrticted by council planning permission when building garages

if the garage is going to be greater than 1 metre and less than 5 metres from the house , you can build a garage upto 24 square metres in whatever formation you want, if greater than 24 square metres, but less than 30 square metres you need planning permision

if it greater than 5 metres from the house , you can build a gargae upto 30 square metres without planning permission, If greater than 30 square metres , then you need building control which is a real headache

You can build either garage 4 metres high from floor to peak of roof

My garage is 29. 8 square metres and is built 6 metres from the house, that gives me tons of room, even after fitting all the worktops and units for storage in the garage. My only regret is that i didnt build it at the back of the garden , and turn the garage sideways with 2 doors , so i could store 2 cars in teh garage, but hey ho, it was the right decision at the time

If it was me i would nt build a garage any smaller than 24 square metres,

pics of my garage, I made it in facing brick all round, managed to get it cheap from a geezer i know :P

garage door is 9 ft wide and 7 ft high, is remote control , electric roller door, and will allow a transit in the garage, as well as my tariler with my fiesta on top of it

Image

I fitted a new kitchen into the house a couple of years ago, and decided rather than bin the old one id fit it into the garage for storage and workspace

Image

one showing the width of the garage 4.5 metres wide, i can open the doors on each side of the car

My front room is 24square meters so imagining another 6square metres and I'd say that'll be excellent working space.

I want your job Dalsy, you seem to have everything I want lol.

I suppose, although I had a long day yesterday, started at 7:30am and didn't get back until 7pm, not quite 12hour but felt like it lol.
Iv got young kids so can't go crazy on cars as much as I'd want to so that's why my fiesta is sat on my dads drive rottinge away until I get time lol.
Atleast by the time umpire your age I'm hoping to have fun.

And heres me thinking I had a cool garage

Although it doesnt look much like this now, because currently its a bit of a mess... the fiesta still fits in there no problem. I've even got my original bonnet on the left side of the wall now, can still open and close the drivers door enough to get in and out of the car with ease.

I guess its all to do with how you use the space. I might go sort it out today thinking about it, the cleaner and tidier it is the happier I will be lol.
