As title said, got bored on the way home, passed this road near my house and thought I would try a shallow depth of field type picture at night so the car is in focus and the rest of the picture isn't... rather hard when the road isn't that well lit because its so wide. I swear you could fit 3 cars length ways across it lol.

Manual setting on the camera with manual focus - bitch to do at night sometimes. Long exposure, shallowish depth of field with f/6 i think.. and thats kind of it really.

They came out ok. Could have cleaned the car I suppose, but meh lol. Its not often you get pictures of dirty cars lol.

I know, the whole car is. Not washed it for about 2 weeks :( I'll do it some point this week.

My plan is to clean the car, park it there again but in the middle of the road, get a lamp and light paint the car to brighten it all up and make the car stand out more. Should look better then.

Give it a few days and ill post the results up.

Will look better when thwart cars in the middle of the road, looks badly parked on the first lol.
Second one looks good, I like the shots with out of focus background.

Nice pictures Danny, always a sucker for long exposure shots at night.

Yeah same. I need to get a shutter cable so I can get using bulb mode to really brighten up the car - then play around with white balance and other settings on the camera to try dim down the street lights a tad so they don't over power the picture and/or use some sort of filter too... something to mess around with.

The only other way to get around having really long exposure shots without camera shake is by using the multiple exposure function I found in the settings. You can take as many pictures as you want with any amount of exposure in each picture and it overlaps them all in a final image kinda thing... which can be helpful in some ways at night depending what type of picture you want if you havent got a remote shutter cable.

But I'm going to try use that feature to replicate something similar to what Nick Williams has done below with the double take. Hes a very talented photographer - local to me too.

Some of his night work is beautiful. Its amazing what difference proper lighting can make than just replying on what you have got around you!

Nice D.O.F and exposure, apart from the way the lights seem to overpower the shot what ISO were you on?

remote releases are an excellent gadget.......think mine was about 12 quid, one of the best little things ive bought imo. certainly essential for light painting. use of extra lighting/ off camera flash is certainly rewarding in its results. i've been looking at flash heads in the last few days actually, not the bowens/elinchrom ones im not that minted but there are some good value ones out there if thats the way you were thinking.

handy, cheap, but slightly pikey tip. a small low voltage bicycle lamp (mines attached to my tripod) when your focusing in very low light..., it wont light up the street it just makes it a little easier to make sure its completely in focus :)

anyways. ill shut up now.

Tips are always good Jam! Cant remember what iso I was using tbh.

I've got a lamp now which I have had a play around with, got some good results so far, but I just need a different location really. Something about this one which isnt making me go 'ooo i like that'

Heres one I did with no street lights facing the side of the car I was taking the picture of, it was all behind the car - it was purely a test to see how much the lamp would light up the car.

The car isnt in focus completely so its a bit rubbish. But it gives me something to work on now knowing what the lamp is capable of and that.

And another one done with the help of the lamp.

Soooooooooooo, on the way home, I was chilling down a local fishermans spot which is literally 30 seconds from my house, whacked out the camera to try get some nice pics of the moon... eventually moved onto the car lol

This is how it looks to the eye pretty much... although not this dark:

Then some long exposure shots later:

The open bonnet one will be done again, but during the day and with some photoshop so the bonnet doesnt look like its open and its just see through. But that picture was straight out the camera on a double exposure.

Another random picture on the way home from a drive in a Focus RS500.

This was taken at around 9pm. Not the greatest, but I couldn't be arsed to faff around with settings on the camera as it was rather chilly!

Took this one last night on the way home between 1-2am. Decided to experiment and take a couple of pictures in the absolute pitch black with no other lighting source apart from a torch.

This was done on a multiple exposure program on the camera. I think 4x 30sec exposures at f2.8, camera on complete manual mode as usual.

I do hate having white wheels sometimes! Might have to make them more dirty then they already are to stop the white blowout lol
