Hiya

Just started after 2.0 conversion and it's running rough. Sounds like its missing ever so slightly.

How rough would it run while ecu is learning?
Plugs, leads and coil pack are all from my 1.6 which was running sweet before. Battery is a bit low but wa running with jump leads so should t be an issue.

Would it be timing out slightly? Engine shakes a bit at idle too.

Any suggestions appreciated as want it running tonight :)

Paul

how long did you leave it running? it will run a bit off while its learning. you might have an air leak or the cam timing may need a tweak.

About 5 minutes or so I guess. How long should I leave it?

Will check the cam timing, I'm guessing it's fairly easy to check just difficult to adjust if large adjustment needed!???!

I have taken the egr out. Back of inlet is looped back on itself. Hose from left side blocked off (pulse air I think) and the two hoses on the right side (egr ones I think) are looped back on each other. That sound right?

plumbing sounds right....ive left them before till the fan cuts in just ticking over maybe hold a fast idle for a min or two. its not difficult to adjust the cam timing. it wont be out by much. its just a bit time consuming and fiddly. if in doubt the haynes book of lies is pretty idiot proof on that front :)

Right, just got back in. Exhaust cam was a bit out, as you say not by much. At a a guess I'd say 1-2 degrees. It wa less that a mil of cam that was stopping the bar sliding in if you know what I mean!?

So now I'm happy timing is right just need to get a new alternator tomorrow and charge the battery and give it another try. Imagine putting three terminals on an alternator for two cables!! No wonder I got it wrong ;)

Will let you know tomorrow how she runs. Fingers crossed :)

Righty ho!

Got the engine running again by connecting the battery in the A4 and she runs a lot nicer. But there is a hissing noise coming from the right hand side of the inlet.

I originally thought it was from the brake servo, and the brake pedal doesnt quite feel right but after reading this viewtopic.php?f=4&t=20665 I wonder if that is my problem, will check tomorrow.

On the alternator front I got a new one today but it is the wrong one as it is configured to mount at the rear of the engine. All that was available off the shelf, and I wanted it working so took it with a view to replacing the front house so it would mount right. Could I get the fooker apart? No, but now that my impact wrench has charged up its apart. Will rebuild tomorrow and install so at least I can start the engine without worrying about the battery.

So, anyone got any ideas for the hissing noise?
I've checked around the servo all seems ok, servo to inlet pipe seems ok, haven't checked the little box on the bulkhead as per the above link as I hadn't seen it when I was outside.

My current vacuum set up post-EGR removal I'm not convinced about, especially the loopback on the item that is noted as failing in the above link. Can you confirm that you have this looped back on itself?

Cheers

Paul

if you have looped out the inlet that box on its own will basicaly suck in and vent to atmosphere doing sod all basically. im pretty sure people only leave them plugged in so the ecu can see it but it wont do anything. i take it as you look at it its the right side..(not the drivers side of the car or offside) is the little rubber breather elbow on? any vaccum leak will cause the vacuum build up to be a bit pants and the servo wont give its best assistance. wd or brake cleaner around joins is a good way of telling if you have an air leak. from a gasket, injector seal etc

Yeah, inlet is looped and it's the one on the right of the inlet on the bulkhead as you look into the bay.
So would looping it back on itself confuse it then? As that's what I've got jut now! Will try leaving both ports open to atmosphere.

Will get some wd and see if that shows anything.

Which rubber elbow do you mean?

on the injector sandwich plate theres a straight fitting on the lower right hand side as you look at it. if memory serves me correctly there should be a little rubber elbow join this to a steel pipe which is routed over the gearbox and down to the pcv on the front of the block.

hope that helps :)

Yeah, been thinking about that one. I'm fairly sure I connected it but not 100%.

Will let you know :)

Ok, story so far.

Alternator: it appears I actually had one for a non pas fiesta. So changed over the outer casing as planned but it clashed with the mounting bracket. A small bit of grinding with a dremmel on the alternator case solved that and she is in.
Started up fine an charging battery like a good un :)

Hissing: was indeed the sandwich plate not being connected. D'oh!

Took her for a spin and the exhaust is blowing a bit (replaced centre section and back box) so will get that looked at tomorrow lunchtime hopefully.

Shes still not running quite right though. Bit stuttery when pulling away and pops when pulling away in first too. Also, doesn't feel as fast as I was expecting. This, I fear, may be more difficult to diagnose :(

Any suggestions? Or areas I can look at to rule them out??
