Looks good, i like how youve put plenty of pick of the engine build, no one does that, they just say they did it, its just nice seeing all the parts come together.

Will you be exploring any 4branch manifolds or going for the standard look?

Sounds like a good plan, especially afterthe talk of the escort box being stronger, will be perfect to stick lsd and deisel fifth gear.
Would be good to see lots of pics of that aswel.

Thats interesting to know actually! Kinda tempted to put the escort box straight away now. Jon (off FT) who popped down to drop off the engine crane said it would be better using the escort box too. I hate being indecisive! Grr lol

would depend what engine the box come off, im sure the 1.4 one would be crap on a zetec, best go for the 1.6 or 1.8 box :)

do you know which it is dan?

will be a slower car, but better for economy

Yeah it's a gti box. I'm going to use the Si box for now and carry out my plans for the escort box as above

The timing is the position of the camshaft/camshafts on the engine. Needs to be set just right to open the inlet and exhaust valves at exactly the correct time, otherwise the engine runs like sh*t

Takes some precision and messing round. Vernier pulleys make it easier as they have extremely fine adjustment on them making the job easier

righttt. so obviously every engine has its own postiion for it to be timed... ill have to google it so i can see pictures of someone actually doing it. im guessing the haynes manual etc tells you where it needs to be set?

Due to engineering tolerances, every engine is indeed slightly different in terms of the exact setting. The probelm when you are doing it without vernier pulleys, the belt somwhat influences where the camshafts end up. Its alot harder on the twin cam engine, the CVH is somewhat easier as there is only one to set.

Haynes tells you what's what

Yeah get on google Ben :) lol

Changing the cambelt when the engine is in car as Dave said is a bit of a bitch due to having literally no room. I did the cambelt on the 1.6 and had to undo the front engine mount to drop the engine down a bit, even then getting the cam pulley guides off was a c*nt to do still.

As Dave has said, if you have a haynes, look at the timing section, think its section 2 or 3, and have a little read through, all will be explained. Also on my pics, you can see ive marked up the cam pulleys and crankshaft, thats to make sure its all in the right place even though it wont be moved, but also when you put it back together, you can turn it over a few times making sure it doesnt knock/get stuck/hit valves ect and then time it up to TDC (top dead centre - cylinder 1 at its highest point), then you can see if all the marks line up. Its just a second way of knowing its right.

LSD and 5th in basic terms. If you want more complex terms, wikipedia is good for that ;)

LSD - Limited Slip Differential.

Basically people fit these to counter out wheel spin, especially in the wet and around corners. Best way to explain it is if you drive your car around a corner/turning while in 1st gear in the wet and floor it, you will notice that one wheel will spin up and the other wont - it will always be the wheel on the side that you are turning, im sure you've noticed it before. Thats because most of the drive from the gearbox goes to that wheel because it has less traction and the diff allows that because thats the way its designed.

But, if you fit a limited slip diff', what happens is that gears inside it are designed in such a way that when a certain amount of torque/slip goes through the gearbox/diff to that one wheel, it locks and transfers it to the other wheel, so you get more or less even amount of traction/power to each wheel - that means less wheel spin, more power getting onto the road and you will go faster around the corner.

Same happens when you accelerate in a straight line, you will always get one wheel spin more than the other, the LSD will stop that and put even amounts of power to each wheel.

That explain it? If not, let me know and ill try explain it again more simply.

5th gear...

Basically, the diesel gearbox 5th gear has a ratio which is really low, so instead of sitting on the motorway at 70mph doing 3500rpm for example, you would be doing something like 2000rpm or less, that basically saves fuel and can be less noisy too through the exhaust.

Also, if you have enough power, it would give you a mega top speed

Thats literally a really simple explanation of both, especially the diff. If you got any questions or want to know more, fire away!
