A decent new engine would cost me £400? Well thats what this one did.

The whole head swap will cost me a touch over £400 inc. my friends labour with a recon head and all headset so when you factor in the extra labour for actually swapping the engine, all the fluids etc. etc and the fact we're working in the dark for a couple hours it would take forever, cost me a lot more (My last one I racked up about 1k with a clutch etc.) and just swapping the head will be cheaper.

I haven't factored out the fact that i'd like the pistons to be checked over and changed but he said if it was in the workshop at work they would put a new head on it and if it was his car he'd just put a new head on it. I know it's kind of a shortcut i'll regret in the future maybe but i'll check it all moves freely and if it does it should be ok.

Any garage would just slap a new head on it, the pistons are strong enough to take the damage, unless you can see any visual damage then they should be ok.

While you check that they all move freely, check they all go to the same height (obviously), and check for piston slap too.

DONT use those pistons !! they will have been weakened and any extra load from the timing being out or anything like that will fuck all kinds of shit up. just change the whole engine and fit it yourself to save labour costs. you will regret it. ALSO the compression will be out due to the marks on the pistons. i have a mahle piston with a 2mm wide dent no deeper than a thickness of card (business card) and have been told its fucked. just a word of advise .. save yourself more hassle and do the lot :thumbsup:

danny look at the pics each piston has a grove where the valves have all hit them, 4 on each piston crown,

£400 for a fucking engine, jesus get rid of it in light of a Si mate, fucking rip off, theyre shit engines too, only last about 80k!!!!


if a new engine is going to cost you near enough a grand fuck it go for that duratec...


or like sam said do it yourself, its not that hard, get started at 9am be done by 5 the next day, and thats without a crane

£100 gets your a 90k 2.0 silvertop zetec thats been driven by a old woman to the shops and to her daughters house every few days in a mondeo, which will last till around 160k if looked after

im really shocked at all this

Get rid of something worth nothing atm. that I've spent k's on. For a cheap battered falling apart si and then spend ££££££s getting it going and continuing to do so.

How is an si going to be better lol

All cars are the same. I'm not really spending that much when you think what im getting and 100 is labour to my mate.

£100 for the engine yes, what about the loss on the ZS? What about the fact I want to keep the ZS? What about the fact the Si will have rust? That'll need welding up each year? If you really look at the bigger picture. It won't save me any money.
