Car went bang.

Drove, went BANG out the exhaust, lost power, wouldn't go anywhere, dead.

Won't start, it turns over rather fast.

Thought it might be coilpack but I changed it back from the one I put in yesterday, same problem.

Gonna check in the morning, the cambelt on the top of the cams and the left feels tight still, maybe its snapped, maybe it slipped. Who knows, either way, not good news.

FML I have so much good luck.

Not really.

Was on the way to matchams so was giving it some abuse, but nothing mega time. It doesn't get driven hard often at all. Might have just been coincidence that it was when I was driving hard or might not.

The fact it turns over is good, does it sound rough/shit when you turn it over? Any knocking? Scraping/screeching? Tapping? Or does it just sound kinda normal but not firing up?

fact it went bang and then suddenly is very fast cranking makes it sound like you've lost all compression, could be a piston melting/shattering, a valve could have come in contact with a piston, could be any number of things :(

some initial checks will help but it doesnt sound like you will find out whats wrong unless you start stripping it :@

Ahh yes, didnt see that it was turning over really fast, compression loss sounds like the main thing then. I would come down and strip it all down for you - could have it done in no time :lol: but I have no car :(

Mate is gonna do it, start next week. Crank pulley bolt wasn't even hand tight, my own fault I know exactly why, its a miracle it lasted so long I guess.

New head needed so if anyone knows of a ZS head for sale let me know, don't need cams :)

Depends how the strip down goes. will happen next week now as its Christmas.

Could be a mess, could be alright, most likely need a new head (£100-300) New headgasket and bolts £80 I've got a timing belt kit.

Just hope it hasn't done damage to anything else

Don't buy anything until its stripped down. Try see if you can get hold of a compression tester too and do it on each cylinder, see what ones loose it, then squirt a little bit of oil down each one that there is little/no compression on, if the cylinder still looses pressure - valve/valve stem seals are gone, if the pressure comes back, will be the piston rings. You wont see the extent of the damage until its stripped down anyway.

How come the crank pulley bolt wasnt torqued up?

Yeah we are going to strip it down first, he should have all the tools we need.

I didn't know anything about it, my friend who did the engine didn't really know about it, he just did it up really right and we both sort of thought "it'll be alright" and cracked on really.

No torque wrench either and didn't bother to look up if it needed it.

lol danny you got them the opposite way around, oil in if pressure ok rings are fine etc, i know you know that


so you think the loose bolt has allowed the belt to slip and take a few valves with it?


if you were pelting it, chances are somethings shattered, easy way to know, get a torch and remove the spark plugs, look at each piston crown for any debris, move the crank to get each piston in the light (up and down)

Will get up in the morning and whip off the cam cover, hopefully no damage to the cams!!

Will check the piston rings like that then, if I stick a magnet in there will it bring up any filling if somethings broken?

It's being stripped down next wednesday properly. If its fully funkadoodled then someone I know has a puma with pop pop ECU sat in his garage he can fit for me.

If its not funked too badly its getting a rebuild and we're back in the game.
