I've got a leak.. a small one.. but its annoying having to top up.

It isn't coming from the pressure sensor on the back of the block...

But it seems to be dripping down somewhere on the gearbox end...

Any ideas other than sump gasket shitting its pants? Might try bodge some sealer around the sump to see if it stops

My 2.0 has a leak around that region, it's definately behind the flywheel i know that. One day i'll bother to find it haha

Oh shit.

Screw that then, that will only get fixed if my clutch dies a death

Its low down, so crank seal would tally up

Then again, I haven't checked the breather, or if its leaking from cam cover at that end and dripping around to the bottom

Cam cover on my 1.6 engine used to weep slightly, but probably because the old gasket had been re-used several times. Wasn't enough to need topping up though.

Also had oil dripping from the bottom of the air filter housing, and running through the gearbox crossmember. The oil was coming from the breather pipe from the cam cover. This was on the day that I killed the engine on a track day though - never had a problem before during normal use.

The 2.0 engine that I bought had a leak in the crank seal area when I got it. Couldn't be sure if it was the seal itself, or the gasket between the seal carrier and the block. Since the flywheel and sump needed to be swapped anyway, we replaced the gaskets and seal at the same time.

I'll live with it if its the crank seal.
I'm not pissing about dropping the box clutch and flywheel until the box needs to come off again.
Clutch will probably die at some point, ready for my paddle clutch and might as well get a lightened flywheel at the same time.

Okay.. as I don't wanna be dropping half the engine to bits to change a seal I don't have to... I have had some more ideas...

Ive used 4ltr of oil (not fully.. maybe just topped up 3ltr worth at most, never checked engine oil level when I got it..) over 2 1/2 months or so.
Top half of engine had a slight coating which makes me thing the cam cover gasket might be the culprit and dripping down to the bottom of the sump/gearbox, doesnt seem to be on the cambelt/oil pump end of the engine, so that rules out the seal around the pump.

The crankcase breather box on the front of the block, which is fed from the inlet manifold sandwich plate... if this is blocked, then surely the engine will spit out excess oil where-ever it can?

The crank seals don't go very often on zetecs... So, first point of call would be clean out the breather box and pipes? Change the cam cover gasket? At worst sump gasket imo. If it is worse than that, I'd have to bite the bullet and do the crank seals, but I'm sure I'd be losing more oil than I am doing.

Get some WD40 and clean up where you can and keep checking it to see if you can spot where it's coming from. If you've had a leak and been driving around a while it gets EVERYWHERE and often looks like it's coming from somewhere it's not.

It'll take you 5 mins to clean what you can up but may well narrow it down and save you hours of frustration!

Good plan!
Cleaned up the head and everywhere I could while I was under it the otherday.

Slight film of oil on the head when I run my finger across.. so might be the rubber gasket on the rocker cover.
Which would make sense as it would run down the engine and gather on the sump, then drip..

Like you say, a little leak can make it look massive if its been on going!

Ahhh awesome mate, I hope you've found it! Oil leaks are a bitch. I had one on the Pulsar after I done the engine rebuild because I didn't cut into the new copper washers on my oil feed for the turbo enough. Went everywhere though, made it look soooo much worse than it was!

Okay so parked at work on a slight forward slope. Nice puddle of oil under the car.
Had a look, and it seems to be coming from the rear and going along the bottom of the sump.

Felt around the back, the block is covered in black sludgy shite, but I'll have to clean it all up to work.out where its from.

Could be oil swtich in block.. surely oil shouldn't be coming from the headgasket??

sorry if im stepping on toes not read everyones, i know you said it seems high up

but id replace your cam cover gasket for the sake of it costing little, and check your cam cover breather pipe make sure its on good and tight, no holes in the pipe too
