Sounds good, but as said, check out the reason for the smoke. Is it using oil?

dont forget these engines are oil burners so some smoke is usual for these, my mates old puma 1.7 used to smoke plenty when he planted it lol

dont bother with a puma engine, cam and remap this and it will be so much easier and probs give you more power

Variable cam timing, not really sure on what it does myself but apparently its good and gives for better driveability.

it alters the (in the 1.7 sigma case) the inlet cams timing, so once you pass about 3,300rpm it advances the cams timing so the engine gwets more fuel and air ratio effectively making more power

but the 1.7's one isnt brilliant, ive driven one and it barely noticeable, my engine which doesnt have it, but has cams seems to give more of a kick when entering the powerband

however there are much better ones out there, Lift by toyota is very good i hear, but the best is honda's VTEC system which kciks in very late, liek about 6k i believe and that gives one hell of a step

the side effect of these cam changes is more drivable when before the change and more torque too, so you can pull up hills etc without guzzling fuel

the new fiesta Zetec s's 1.67 uses twin independent cam timing

personally though i dont see the point, i prefer systems like the duratec v6 found in the mondeo and couger, it uses a valve systemt hat only uses half the inlet valves untill like 3.5k to safe fuel and produce more low end torque, so only 6 of the 12 inlet valves open untill 3.3k
:)

Its nothing like VTEC or VVTI I've told you that before

It doesn't give you any sort of kick, I can't remember exactly what it does but it's different to all that,

read up on it :)

vtec is just a very effective version of it, changes the timing of a cam or both to introduce more fuel and air at a certain rev

think they map it direct to the ecu, unlike the mk3 where you need a chip plugged into it

Standard ECU.

Get a compression test before you cam it to make sure its all running smoothly.

I was on about VCT not being the same as VTEC and VVTI, VCT doesn't "kick in" it just makes the power delivery better over the rev range or something.

chris vct stands for variable cam timing, meaning the timing of the cam will change during some point in the rev range, hence the "kick in" feeling

when the extra fuel/air comes it will give a step up in power

They should all be of similar numbers, if there not ok then numbers will be all over the place.

The garage will know what to do and should only cost a tenner really.

VVTi is almost like VCT its not a massive kick.

Also Lift also "kicks" like vtec.

I can't argue because I can't remember the thread or what it consisted of.

I just know VCT doesn't kick in.

Yeah its there in the low RPM to help driveability early on in the rev range, I can't think of how it was explained.

nnah like i said expecially the 1.7's it hardly gives a kick, as you feel a bigger difference when my engine enter its powerband, but if you looked at a RR graph you'd deffo see where it comes in

Vtec really lets you know lol

not sure on the 1.6 SE itself but generally most petrol engines run around 170-200 PSI mate, its it like 120 in a cylinder or 2 then you have a positive leak and the piston rings or valve stem seals, headgasket is letting pressure out

if you are camming it, be aware that headgaskets like to take that time to fail, the change in power and pressure make a old gasket give up
mine did the first time i booted it :P
