Ive done the sills today, both cleaned, any rust scabs removed and proper caked them in hammerite, small hole in the drivers one, need to do a nice big orange patch on the floor next :shock: its only surface though, whats the best method? Take it back to bare metal and hammerite? Or something else? Its the bit just in front of the fuel tank :)

Man Im glad I dont own a Mk 3 anymore. My old one however had the old filler cap problem, which was sorted, and that was a 1992 J reg on 80,000 miles, and that was the ONLY spot of rust.

It really is all down to looking after your car, Im not saying the rust on your's is down to your negligance, but seriously, once it's fixed, for the love of God look after it.

My Mk 4 (As members will vouch for) is meticulously cleaned and detailed, but Fords fantastic arches have let me down at only 29,000 miles. This is after 8 years of motoring though :o and a bit of harsh winter salt the rot has finally come through, otherwise it's quite tidy :D

In answer to your question about your floor pan, if you can, get it cut out and new metal put it, I know it's surface, but no amount of sanding and painting will stop rust. It only takes a few tiny spots to start up again, especially when your talking about something as important as the floor pan, I'd get it done proper rather than "dress" it up.

i was thinkin for a moment.

if the previous owners for the last 10-12 years looked after their si's, washed weekly, waxed etc, do you think they would all be spotless and no rust?

-i actually dont think they would. i think they'd all rot away even if every stone chip was attended to straight away.

i actually blame the paintwork and undersealant used on fords in general.
Peugeot don't seem to have the same problems, most french cars don't, i think they dip their panels in some sort of rust inhibitor, dry it, undercoat it, paint it, laquer it (with expensive laquer - not cheap shit).

i think its all abotu the paint, when you think about it, if a piece of metal is completely sealed from weathering (the paint and laquer), how can it possibly rust from the inside out?.

I also think all si's should of had mud flaps as standard, i bet as a test we could find out if si's without m.flaps are worse than those with?

Mine's got quite a lot of rust evident, no mudflaps.

anyone with mudflaps care to put your bit in?
