Apart from the scrote...

I did all the prep on the fiesta pickup twice and have helped prep other cars. I did paint the punto with the gun and came out well.

Will be doing all the prep and filler primer on the ka, but let my mate do the imp blue.

The finish is in the prep work, don't rush the prep. Painting isn't that hard if you have the right equipment. Ideally you need a well ventilated area with good air filtration and circulation. The only things that will spoil the finish are

Poor prep
Rushed paint application
Dust and dirt etc in the air

If you seriously gonna have a go well worth having a go on some old panels first to see what quality of finish your getting from your equipment/patience

As a qualified Painter & Decorator Instructor (with NVQ2 option in spraying) the hard part is in the prep as everyone else has said. Prep is any work done that does not include the direct application of paint. So this includes each layer treatment, smoothing between layers and so on.

I've seen computer cases with better paint jobs than factory painted cars (even with a rattle-can being used).

Some tips (for the time consuming but jealousy inducing paint job):

Clean and sand back to bare metal. Try to use as little filler as possible by getting wooden blocks and tapping out even the stupidest of tiny dimples from the other side against the wooden block. The less filler you use, the more metal you're painting and the paint you're using (unless you're Paul) is designed for metal because the filler will always have different painting properties than metal and if you're like me, you will notice any imperfection.

Use a good etching primer and use two coats with a good 1200 grit sanding in-between. Wet-and-dry after the second coat, dry sand with high-grade paper after the first colour coat (2000+). Wet-sand after the first laquer coat.

Best sanding block for curves is a hard sponge instead of wood. Applies even pressure across the area you're sanding.

If you're spraying don't forget to go far over the edge before sweeping back and if using rattle-cans to warm the can first in a pot of water that is at body temperature. Please confirm with a thermometer first before doing this as 40 degrees is about the top level, complaining on the forums later when it's exploded in your face isn't a good thing, sitting it in the sun for 5 minutes just doesn't do the same job. If the quality of spray isn't perfect then don't be afraid to do two very thin coats to count as one coat before sanding. Always be happy doing a thin coat and doing an another coat in total over trying to make sure it's covered in one!

what i use for prepping a car to have a top coat/respray in same colour is just use grey scotch pads dipped in water with 3M prep and blend paste. always a winner and makes the job easier for you to do! then go around the whole car degreasing everywhere like mad and use proper panel wipe cloths then just before spraying go over with tack cloths

I did toy with just rubbing it back abit but i needs abit of work. Both of the front doors need filler work where they have been delocked and the filler has blown under the paint.

Im going to have plenty of time to do it so would rather get it as far back as possible towards the metal.

The only thing im worried about is that the car has over 500-600 microns of paint on some panels ( thats over 5 coats to those who dont know ), so i think i bound to get issues with something somewhere along the line if i choose to just add another layer!
