Ive wrote my fiesta st off.

budget 8k max

criteria;

needs to do 12k a year so no huge fuel consumption
needs to do 0-60 in less than 9 seconds.
not overly bothered about insurance grouping.

des has insipred me and im leaning towards a mondeo mk3 st tdci.

leather, full electrics, 153 bhp, super torque, 185 bhp with remap, more torque, cheap enough to insure, cheap to tax, 0-60 8.5 secs, 40-55 mpg.

yes its a ford. i like them.

Great spec for those Beemers, really good figures too, the performance of their diesels are awesome!

But like you say, the Mondeo ST's (petrol or diesel) are also great specs! You're in the same boat as me. I'm liking the Mondy, but it's fekkin fwd! And I love the Beemer, but it's more expensive for a similar spec.

Astra 1.9CDti SRI Spec, 150bhp standard 236 Ft/lb, 6 speed box, Motorway runs can get up to 65mpg.

My brothers got one and tbh its a fantastic car, Also has the added extra of a "Sport" button which tightens up the steering and spools the turbo quicker. has a serious amount of torque, after a map your looking at 190/200bhp and over 300 ft/lb.
(My brothers was RR'd at 157bhp.)

I would go with plan B, you can get a perfectly good car for that money... as you have found.

The Saxo does sound a good deal I can personally vouch it will make you smile.

I think Plan B thinking is good - Maybe not the VTS plan exactly, great cars, but I do agree that you don't need to spend bang on £8k or even half that on a car.
