My son who's now 20 is looking to buy and insure his first car. He was looking a fiesta mk5 1.25 for about £1400. His got no NCD and has had his full licence nearly a year now, but his getting quotes of about £3k+ with an excess more then the cost of the car. What's his cheapest option of insurance even if it's through me as long as it doesn't effect my premium or NCD in the event he makes a claim ?

Some companies see that he's insured through you so may raise their prices because of that

Unfortunately £3K + sounds about right for a 20 year old.
Try www.tiger.co.uk comparison, it throws up the same insurance companies as others but us based on young and new drivers so gives cheaper quotes.

Is there anyway he can be insured under me, but without effecting my premiums or even if he wasn't the owner of the car for example

just put you on his car insurance as the main driver

If you add his car to your policy and him as a named driver it will be fronting and will be illegal if he is the main driver of the vehicle, also he won't build up any NCB.

In short his best bet is to get a very cheap car to by and insure (like a 1.0 corsa)

My mate just passed his test recently and really struggled to find a car he could fit in (6ft5), that he could afford the insurance on and within his budget of <£1000.
I know for a fact that a Fiat Cinquecento Sporting is a fun car, insurace group 3 and tall people can fit in it.
He got quoted £4000 for that

So we looked around for ages! In the end we could only find 2 cars for less than £1600
-Vauxhall Corsa B 1.2
-Ford Ka mk1

So for now he's got a Ka... and in time i'm gunna make him deck it on some Capri pepperpots

Try looking at cars that guys are unlikely to drive, that might help. Because you'd never see a boy racer in an unmodified ka haha, but you'd get loads in a fez

If you are added to his policy, then that might bring the policy down.

You will lose your NCB though if you put him on your policy on a car and he crashes. (Although you could protect your no claims) But it is fronting also.

that does seem a lot, i know there is a difference between boys and girls still at the moment but my 18year old daughter with a Mk1 Ka was about £1000, as said above put yourself or others as named drivers and try any combination of things on a insurance comparison web site to see what lagitimately reduces things like expected max milage etc

Well tried a mk2 corsa 1.7dti and corsa 1.0 and they were coming in at about £2k that's with me added to the policy which dropped the price from £2.5k

Diesel will be the better option, much better MPG and power.

This seems to be the typical price nowadays. Lad I know just passed his test, had already bought himself a little polo, no mods or anything, and he's paying 2k for a 6 month policy!

Bloke at work was telling me his nephew could only get a 3k quote for a little shitty car.

It's ridiculous at the mo. Really is. So glad I'm not in their position, but it doesn't help.

Wouldn't surprise me if the insurance companies are putting the prices to this level in a hope that people DO put down false details, and in the event of a claim they can cancel the policy and make some money back for all these compensation claims that have apparantly put our prices up...

Insurance is mad these days! My renwal quote last september when I took the car off the road was like just over £500, now im getting quotes for upwards of £800. I think the best ive had was just under £700, i didnt realise the £500 compulsary excess though. So that went out the window!
