I am just about to replace my knackered Si 1.6 gearbox in my 2.0lt conversion with a S2 rst Lsd box. Would it be worth getting a lightweight flywheel? or would it make no difference at all?
Theres a firm on Ebay that sell organic fast road clutch kits and billeted lightweight flywheels for Frst and Zetecs for £250 approx jsut weighing up pros and cons.
Wondering is anyone else has done this to there Fsi?

how heavy is the standard flywheel and how heavy are the aftermarket ones?

im getting one milled down then balanced for £35 then he is gonna knife edge my crank :) he done my mini and its worth getting it done the before and after was so much better :)

Pros are that there's less resistance when the revs climb so you can effectively put down more of your wheel power rather than lose it in transmission loss.

Cons are it's a thinner walled flywheel and could potentially shatter/crack one day if too much heats get put through it. There's also a theory that taking the weight off the flywheel decreases the transmission side of the engines braking power when slowing down using the gears,basically revs stay higher for longer when using gears to slow down so you won't slow down as quick as you used to.

I could be wrong but that's my 2p worth.

I also heard (don't quote me on this! Just something someone said about there car they had when there young) That getting up hills is a lot harder and you have to be in lower gears as it struggles........

Yeah you are right Chris, because there is less momentum (sp) to keep the flywheel spinning so you have to down shift to bring the revs up to keep it spinning fast to get up hills.

Also along with that, you will find the top end is less than normal too and it will probably be screaming too.

But its all to do with how much weight is shaved off and that.

I know someone from FT who was going to swap a zetec one for a cvh one and we had a massive research session about it on msn one night. If i can find the websites later ill post them up :)
