happypaul's Ford Endura TD engine quick tuning guide
*note, I am not a mechanic, and I don't know what I'm doing either

so don't blame me if it goes tits up!

Best thing to do on the Escort is jack up the front end, and un-do the 4 13mm bolts holding the radiator housing behind the bumper.. be careful not to rag it around too much especially if you have A/C.
This will lower down enough for you to access the bits on the pump!
Remove the plastic cover and front grill also.
Now you'll be able to reach to the pump fairly easily (I'll get pics tomorrow when I mod mine some more!)
Now what you could do is a few things...
1:- Adjust the boost compensator only (this is pre-boost fuelling) this will give your car some bollocks while setting off and get the turbo spooling faster as a result. It will throw black smoke out if turned up, but thats fine.
2:- Do the above and do the max fuelling screw, along with some more boost.
3:- Turn the boost compensator DOWN, and turn the max fuelling screw HIGHER, (and more boost) which in turn will give fuelling across the whole of the rev range and will stop it smoking like a mofo before the turbo is fully spooled.
See here:-

This is the boost compensator, use a 14mm spanner to un-do the locknut, and a 4mm allen key to turn the screw..
1:- Turn the screw anticlockwise between 3/4 - 1.5 turns and lock it off. Go enjoy better setting off and a little smoke!
2:- Do the same.
3:- Wind it all the way in clockwise and then wind out 1.5-2 turns.
Now see this pic:-

I have circled a plastic screw cap in green, forget the other stuff its a load of BS apart from the shocker thing, but I dont think escorts have that.. mine didnt.
Behind this plastic bit is the max fuelling screw inside the pump!
Cover your alternator up, and if poss get something to catch the diesel while you open it up.
Use a screwdriver and gently tap this bung ANTICLOCKWISE and unscrew it.
Inside you will see a gear, in this gear you will find a 4mm allen key hole.. if you dont see it, rock the car in gear until you can see it!

Shove a 4mm allen key in there and get some leverage.. you want to be turning this CLOCKWISE. and it is TIGHT!

2:- As you have turned the boost compensator up, don't go too mental otherwise it will smoke like fook off boost.. so *according to other guides* I would turn the screw 30-40 degrees.
3:- Turn it some more, because you need to give it more fuelling after turning down the preboost fuel.. 306 users have found 90 degrees of turning was enough before smoke at full throttle, I am unsure of this just yet but I turned mine around 60-70 degrees (and will be doing more tomorrow!)
After doing that, screw the cap back on tight.
Prime the pump with the push down primer on top of the fuel filter.
Bolt the rad back up.
Enjoy!
BOOST!
What you need is, plumb a manual boost controller into the pipe going from actuator to turbo, and adjust as you like. You NEED a boost gauge. I got a nipple and fitted it into the side of the intercooler to get my boost readings from!
Note: photos are robbed from a mondeo and 306 pumps, the escort pump is a pig to get to without dropping rad down, trust me
