hi everyone my speedo on my white fiesta runabout died today, i was driving along at 70 no probs when later on in the day the needle started to wobble a bit 1-2 mph then 30 mins later went straight down to zero and doesnt work when driving , and so the mileage is staying the same, not sure what is could be except cable and the bit on the top of the gearbox and been told possibly the speedo bearing in the gearbox? the car is 140,000 miles and where is a slight droaning sound when going along which is not bearing as it stops when i put the car into neutral?

any ideas people?

Id go with the calbe firstly Phil. Pain in the arse to change from what I have heard.

As for the droning that could be a bearing in the gearbox itself, me the mainshaft or layshaft bearing. I wouldnt worry about that too much until it gets to a point when you only have 2 gears... or none

Well if it is the gearbox, like you said, it might be worth just sticking a lower milage engine and box in. But thats hassle and money!

How about you take the speedo out and just go for a little drive up the road or something and just see if the end of the cable operates from where it goes into the back of the speedo? That would be the best place to start, because it saves half hour or so fannying around taking out the cable, replacing it to find out it could be the speedo itself thats decided to go...

Id do that first, then if the cable doesnt work, you know its that, if it does work, stick your clocks from your si on there for a split second to see if it works... problemo sorted.
