Hey folks,

Just after a bit of advice really, as some of you may know I had a set of coilovers which weren't much cop. I sent them to avo for a refurb and they told me that basically the rears were f****d. They couldn't be repaired but they do a deal in such situations where they will supply a replacement brand new for cost price. I could then have the fronts refurbed for normal price. They said they could look after them until I decided. I'm guessing they havent chucked them yet but I really should get back to them now.

Bassically I can have 2 like new front coilovers and 2 brand new rears for around £300 - do you reckon it's worth it???

Secondly, my friend has warned me off coilovers as they all have a tendency to rust to high hell. His experience with them is from a selection of cars he's tested and he says that the adjustor threads will rapidly rust and sometimes they will rust on 6 week test trips, that they are only really suited to track cars where they will be taken off and lubricated after every race and that on a road car they will be more trouble than worth. So do any of you have comments on this, experience of this or experiences to the contrary?

Obviously I will believe everyone and his opinion could be just that but if a new set of spax/gmax is around £200 and a set of pretty much new coilovers is £300 I want to make sure if I spend the extra money I get a product that will perform and last.

All advice is greatly appreciated

Coilovers by design are adjustable for spring preload and rebound damping main purpose is to be able to make adjustments to suit your specific car, driving style and road/track. reason they generally cease up is once fitted for road driving you never adjust them again.
a basic suspension kit is a non adjustable 'comprimise' set up which suits most situations.

in my opinion coilovers look good, great for adjustment for track days, but not used to their full for general every day use and may not last as long and retail at around £560 is bit OTT.

however finally if you can get a near new set for £300 i would have them, an old servicable set go for £250ish on ebay

As said, £300 is a bargain price for a near new set of coilovers. I bought mine for £250. And as for rusting, copper grease will stop that, also just give them a good clean and that once a month or so can help. Thats what I do with my AVO's and they are good still :)

everyone i know and their dog that have fitted coilovers have had them rust solid if they don't use copper slip, especially the cheap raceland ones, every set ive fitted i've always used copper slip all over the threads generously and they haven't any signs on rusting up, but if its just for a road car, personally i would say a decent set of shocks and lowering springs does the job fine, preferable a matched set of shocks and springs from spax or gmax, but if you can get a good branded set of coilovers for around £300 thats what i would do tbh

Coilies aint that bumpy of a ride, i would actually say my mates coilies are softer than my suspension set up! Just make sure you use copper grease on the threads and take them off and take them apart and clean them every so often.
