Hi all,

Me and my bro a looking into buying a cheap track car to share for public trackdays....and we were wondering what IS needed for the average trackday?
i.e.
MOT
Insurance
Tax?

We were considering buying a proper track car...with no MOT but think this may be a problem - obviously we would trailer it about..
Also, insurance - if we are specifically using it for track and it's being stored off the road...do we need insurance? Whats the done thing?

Cheers

Nope you don't need insurance.

Never took my car on track itself, but as long as the car is in good condition then it should be let on, I hear certain trackday orgainsers do like an MOt cert though, but Tax isn't required either.

What car are you looking at?

Unsure at the minute, could be anything though.
Ideally:
- Under 1k
- Rollcage would be good....not essential
- quick as or quicker than a 2.0ltr fsi....not essential
- MOT...if reqd - going to need to clear up.
- Pref small...ish
Mostly been looking at 205's and Clio's

We were considering slicks, possibly in the long run...I suppose a cage can always be added.
First trackday will be at Mallory Park, which is a short but fairly quick circuit...quick corners...
Other than that it'll no doubt be donny, silverstone, possibly rockingham etc.
It's an interesting one regarding the MOT.

Thanks for the advice!

i would take it steady at first to learn the car and track, consider some instructor time if available and not get caught up in getting to competative to catch up with others to early, sure fire way to a trip to the gravel trap

....well that couldn't have gone much worse tbh!!!
fog meant no-one could go out for the morning session, when i eventually did finally get my first ever go i ended up putting it in the gravel trap following some 80mph oversteer.
ooops
pics etc to follow

they are looking at getting either another date or a refund of some sort...
car was a pug 205 gti fitted with a 1.9 mi-16 engine. It was a pig. back end wanted to throw itself out on every corner, i just couldn't get the hang of it...it's straight line speed is very impressive, it's handling on the other hand :sigh:
it has actually put me of slightly. i'm thinking of having a go next year in a car i can actually drive well (my fsi with a few tweeks). I don't want to be the fastest, i just want to enjoy it and be comfortable with the car i am in.
Thats how i feel at the moment anyway, pics etc will follow on members gal either today or tommorrow..
thanks for the response

205's ment to be known for lift off over steer so might just need bit of time in it or setting up suspension wise all in all should be a good track car, other thing to watch on Mi16 engine while on track is oil starvation issues when cornering, worth a look if you haven't already on 205 forums for more info

it's probably the rear beam which has seen better days! it should only over steer if you lift off during the corner unless you're provoking it - may be worth sourcing a new beam?

Pics of the 205!
