Having a debate with someone who's just bought an RX8 today, and he said he usualy leaves it two minutes before he thrapes the life out of it. Bearing in mind these cars hit 9000rpm, I thought that was a bit insane really!

I usually leave mine at least 5 minutes AFTER the water has got up to temp, but more 10 minutes. so generally 10/15 minutes before I open my car up properly.

What do you guys do??

I will let it get up there before any 7k action, but there has been times when I have 'needed' to do it sooner.

I never really knew about this until recently, it's sort of educated me about it so I don't rev about 4k (or just drive normally, depends whats needed) then once the needle hits the middle (which takes a few minuites, not tooo long) when its needed i'll drive it hard :D

This isn't to say everytime I go out I redline my car and thrash the hell out of it. but generally.

I refuse to move my car until it's warned up. Unless I have to and then I won't take it over 2.5k revs :halo:

Absolutely let it warm up. It's mental how much longer oil takes to warm up than you think. When the coolant is up to temp, you've still got a while before the oil is at it's best for thrashing. I can't boot it when I start it up anyway, there's a limiter which stops it if it's not warm enough.

And it's best not to just let your car sit there for too long, it's best to drive and warm it up. Keep the revs low, let it warm up naturally.

It's so hard to tell when it's ready if you don't have oil temp and pressure guages though, so most people I know will give it some too soon. Obviously if you NEED to boot it it'll be ok occassionally. But regularly doing it isn't good.

I'm glad I'm not alone! I've recently told him off with how metal expands in the engine bay and how oil needs to heat up to work correctly! :lol

I always let it warm up for about a min, then drive it normally for a couple of miles before even thinking about putting my foot down.

As said oil takes a lot longer to warm up than oil and cold oil does not move as easy as hot oil, therefor its harder for the oil to be moved about the engine. In a worst case, ie revving it too say 7k on start up, you could run the bearings dry. However im sure no ones that stupid!

I shall do a test when I get my car running again to time just how long the oil takes to get up to decent operating temperatures. It really is surprising how long it takes! Even the people who are a bit careful with their cars for a few minutes will probably think it's not as long as it is. :)

My dads makes me laugh when he warms his car up before going... by revving the tits off it.
