How do I know if it's disintegrated or what? just took the car down to a local garage for the back box and they said the cat is knackered. He demonstrated it by banging on it and it sounded hollow(ish). I'm slightly convinced by it as there was a slight rattle down the exhaust as he did it.

Kinda urgent to find out as the MOT is in 8 days

If it's disintergrated then there will be a rattle as it's banged or shook. However, as I recently done the same on the Escort we have, it was only when I got the mid section of the exhaust off that I realised the rattle was actually the baffles in the mid section rather than the cat.

saying its knackered just by banging it seems a bit crude, if he had it on a ramp it would only took 5mins to pull the exhaust of the back of the cat shine a torch up it and have a look, should be able to see the matrix like this

funny...instructions for cat's specify...DO NOT drop or strike with tools! you may have burnt the precious metal coating inside...happens with age. the only test you can really do is an emissions test..if it fails its not working properly.

How do people bash out the insides?
I've looked at my old fooked one and I can't get anything in there due to the bend in the pipe

If you need a catalytic converter then I have the one off my old Si that has done about 500 miles as the car was rotten which I found out after the car had had a new catalytic converter to solve its running issues

i recently had a problem with the cat on my si. It had collapsed inside and i had to buy a new one. With the collapsed one on the car i notice a massive lack of power (bout 30mph flat out) and a hissing noise from the gases working their way back out the inlet manifold. i didnt notice any rattle tho

I'm guessing your converter blocked the pipe, mine has disappeared!

Ok, got the old one off, new one in the process of going on. Got the two bolts on the manifold joint attached, but loose. How should I go about getting the rest re-attached? I'm unfortunate in the way that I can only raise the car by the tyre jack and putting it on axle stands.

The midsection needs putting onto the cat exit pipe and the rubber hanging gromets need getting back on on the rear section. Anyone got some tips?
