I put the handbrake on and heard a loud bang, handbrake ended up vertical. was dark so just left it in gear overnight.
Come to it today and after dropping the handbrake down and pulling it back up it just about holds but the car now leans to the drivers side when its on, does not work untill around the 5th click and even then its pretty dire.

Mechanics looked at it and said it needs a new brake adjuster but they can only be bought from ford who want over £50 for it, does this sound right?

Any other thoughts as to what else it could be??

I had a similar problem with an escort I had. The teeth wore away on the ratchet bit of the adjuster. Ended up getting another one from a local breaker.

Yeah the teeth on the ratchet go and i wont hold the hand brake, Ill have a look for you tomorrow on a car im getting some bits off. Pretty hard to get a decent pair second hand though

buy a TRW super kit, comes with the brake shoes, springs, adjusters and wheels cylinders, all built ready to fit to the backing plate about £25 from motor factors

it happened with mine mate. had mine bodge welded to get it throught he mot but im gonna get one soon.

did yours have the same symptoms?

Im hoping that when the replacement arrives I can just swap it all straight over and will be back to normal, might put it on the lift to do it just in case it needs adjusting and the exhaust/ heatshield have to come off!!
