got a quote for a service, £100!

my dad knows someone who will do it for about £70 (not including discs or pads if i need them).

so im wondering to get the service done and do the pads and brakes myself. will eventually work my way up to doing a service myself but doing the brakes myself will be much cheaper.

this link is for discs and pads (seem legit) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 2759.l1259

one last Q, how do i tell i need new pads and discs?

thanks, ben

Parts for the service are the main cost, All the filters, oil etc.
I pay £90 for my mate to do it, so its not all that cheap. But i'm sure it could be a lot cheaper.

Discs - Feel the outer edge, if you feel a wall, the disc is worn, if not, then theres no wear, obviously if theres only a little bit of wear but if its majorly dipped its bad.

Pads, look at the pad or feel the pad to see how much is left on the holder.

Nope  I could do all the filters etc. I just need showing first, I'm tempted to get hold of all the servicing kit so I can do all that myself instead of forking out the money.

Get a haynes manual. Iv not hd my car serviced as such but its had new air filter and oil change with oil filter, coud do with a fuel filter change. My brakes are barely worn due to little miles i do in it.

The only thing id pay to be done is oil change as i cant be arsed disposing of oil, that only cost me £20.

Don't even question whether you should do it yourself, just do it. It's the easiest piece of piss to do in the world...

Yup, once you've done it once, you'll loathe evey paying anyone to do it again!

Just don't over tighten the plugs or filter and you'll be fine.

It's a job when once done, you feel all manly. :gheeyyy:

Just go to a local parts shop and get the stuff you need cheaper. It should only take a couple of hours for your first time.

It really, really, really, REALLY isn't hard to do. Get over the fear of working on a car. It's just a few bolts and screws holding things together. And doing a service is the most basic thing to do. Have a search on YouTube and watch some video's to get a first hand look at what's involved :)

That's pretty much it, apart from plugs and leads if you're going the full hog. And if you're really going to town, gearbox oil! And not 100% as I can't remember, but you may need a sump plug washer for when you refit the sump plug, can't remember if it has one, sure it does. Might be Nylon, might be copper, or it might be already on the sump plug - can someone confirm please?

End of the day, if you get stuck, there's always FSi to help! But get up one morning, and get cracking on with it as early as possible! Give yourself enough time, and TAKE YOUR TIME. You will be very pleased with yourself once it's done, and will have saved some money! :D

Nope, should all be in stock if your parts shop is half decent! Don't go to Halfords for oils, they're expensive.

Just tell the parts bloke what you have and he'll get you all the right stuff :)
