The problem iv been having for like forever is still there but only slightly since the box went in, i only noticed today really when i set off fairly quickly from a stand still. Firstly i thought it was the drive shaft so i replaced one that had alot of play innit but the problem was still there so i thought the drive shaft has broke the gearbox so that has been replaced and simce thje gearbox was in everything seemed fine until i give it some from stand stil today, im confident the box is good so could the other drive shaft need replacing? has the original gearbox broke the replaced drive shaft?

The symptoms are basically when the most torque is goin through the wheels i hear a sort of grinding noise/slipping noise like the splines slipping if you know what i mean? with the replaced gearbox improving it alot the problem must be between there and the wheels so any ideas? Im gonna have to take it quite easy so this box doesnt end up like the last one lol

I know some of you super project guys will know of something i can do so comments very very welcome!

Dude did you check the clutch when you took the box off, my mk2 was making a squeeling and sometimes juddering when i took my foot of the clutch. Turns out a piece of the clutch plate had broke so it wasnt engaging fully even though it appeared to be. Just an idea. :)

The clutch isnt that old, when the problem first started i had it changed and the car seemed better but still that problem then it got worse again. Maybe the problem lies around there,iv still got the old box so i will try and inspect it, could the splines that go in the clutch be worn? Then with the new clutch in it obviously made it better but the worn splines on the box worn where it goes in the clutch but now the box has been replaced the clutch splines have worn which is ztill causing s slight problem, i hope ths makes sense . .

Stupid question to start with...is there oil in the box? :D

There will always be wear on the splines but shouldnt be excessive but you mentioned that when the clutch was changed it made it better but not cured it. Says to me it might be around this area. but you dont want to take the box of if you dont need to. Is it just making a noise or can you feel it as well, juddering etc, are you sure the clutch isnt slipping to :)

Just to double check did you change your thrust bearing when you did the clutch? are you losing performance etc? i noticed in your pictures that your pressure plate has a lot of wear from the thrust bearing.

Sorry for amount of questions dude, see if we can get to the bottom of this for you...i know how damn anoying it is to be chasing the tail of a problem

The new box definatley had oil put it, i can feel it through my feet, its not really a judder but feels like something is not gripping under higher presser the higher the gear like for example if was on the motorway id never feel known there was a problem and it pulls as normal but at low speeds i could feel it and hear it, its very hard to detect now the box is changed so as you say the problem must lie around here. When i get home tonight i will get a pic of the old box where it goes into the clutch and see what you think.

So the clutch in your last few pictures is your new clutch yea? look at the pic you will see the wear im on about. Might just be thrust bearing wear mate. Leave it idle, put your foot on clutch then take it off again see if you can here the thrust bearing being noisy when its off.

I pushed to clutch last night and couldnt hear any thing out of the ordinary. Could the drive shafts cause this problem? There doesntseen to be any play in them? One has been replaced because it had alot of play in i so maybe there is something up with the other one?

No unfortunatly, i cant afford it. Maybe im wrong, im no mechanic lol. I just know it was nakard. The guy at the garage took it for a drive then stuck it on a ramp and said i need a new drive shaft but i have to be careful because it might brake my box if i keep using it si i had the drive shaft replaced but it still did it so they messed around with it and said i need a new gearbox so thats done so im not sure now what to do.

Well its a peiceful sunday so i thought i would get to the bottom of this, as iv described the noise i hear sounds like the slipping of splines so where would you fined them, in the gearbox so i set about taking a look at the parts that the drive shaft attach to so take a look at these pics and you can see they are worn down, now much but tbh it wouldnt take much really:

the first 3 are the passenger side and the last one is the drivers side, the drivers side doesnt look as bad but thats the one that hasnt had the drive shaft changed so that will need changing and hopefully problem solved :wth: so long as this gearbox doesnt get ruined because of it. Has anyone of you guys ever suffered this problem as this it just seems to be me lol?

the splines are fine there aint a problem there of what i can see. how is the clutch cable and pedal. i no it seems weird but it could be something around that area if youve changed the box and shafts.

yh could well be. clean up the grease on the inside of the cv boots and look at the roller bearings. see if there is an loose or dont spin round nice and freely. have you checked for any play at your wheel.

the wheels seems fine. iv been reading the good old haynes manuel and researching on the internet all day over cv joints and you both could be right, im gonna get the mot done first because ther is probably quite a few things need doing on it then, on the bank holiday give it all a good check over. Would it be easier to just replace the shafts than cv joints?
