The 1.6 runs crap, seems to overfuel like crazy and power is lost when going for it at around the famous 4k level. It also judders whiplash style even at low speeds/revs when the engine is cold. I've also had a rather scary moment cruising at 70, then a complete loss of power (but everything still working, even hearing the engine still firing) down to 60mph then it went back to normal. It didn't jerk like quickly taking my foot off the pedal, but smoothly and fairly quickly decelerated.

I suspected the MAF because of the 4k revs thing and have won one on eBay brand new still in packaging for £3. But just to make sure there are no other issues adding to the problem I did a test yesterday. I removed the metal holding clip on the plug of the MAF and started the car. It starts fine as always and then I unplugged it after around 10 seconds. The engine sounded very quiet and very very smooth. My listening position was bent over the engine looking at it from the front. I then went and revved it, it revved much better, picking up faster sounding smoother. I plugged it back in and 2 seconds passed and then a gruff noise appeared, never noticed how gruff it was coming from the exhaust manifold, revved it and it hesitated for a split second, didn't pick up as fast and popped and coughed on lift off.

The engine has a cone filter attached, no idea who made it.

So what's you opinion?

Check the Throttle Position Sensor also. I had that problem and it was that to blame.
And the Lambda exhaust sensor could be the issue also.

The 3 work together, so if one is faulty, the other two compensate within the ECU.

ive got the same problem mate. all ive done is just unplugged the maf sensor and it runs much more better and revs a lot easier. do you have a K&N on it. if so i found out that it can be sucking in too much air for the sensor.

It might be K&N but there's nothing on it that says who made it. I'm going to get a standard airbox for it anyway. I've read everywhere though that unplugging it is a bad idea fuel economy-wise.

Does unpluggin the MAF cause it to not fuel properly?

Yeah, because it's not reading the mass of the air, it goes to default values, which usually aren't going to match what the air mass actually is. So the fuel to air ratio which is calculated by mass in the ECU is going to be wrong.

Have you all tried to clean the MAF?

Always does a good job. And reset the ecu while your cleaning it
