Its all good jam, I no you wernt preaching.

At 3000 rpm it was hitting 24degrees of advnce, should be nearer 8,
At 6500 rpm it was 20degrees should of been nearer 16.

Don't no terrys exact values due to never getting to datalog his. Taking the chip somewhere to get it read so I can see the values and map tables on a screen to see how bad it actuly is.

    so at cruising rpm it was running around 3 times the correct ignition advance thats plain mental..if terrys is anywhere near that bad im not suprised it shit its pants and died..for all the wrong reasons this time :(

next time terry..it needs to go in a sideways fest of tyre smoke..not driving it like some old tart :halo:

Jam.

Yep its stupid, even running on race fuel I don't think it would of survived that sort of det.

The flame front at that rpm is pretty quick so that amount of advance is just stupid. I've no idea where they plucked that sort of figure from.

Even the extra 4 or so degrees at the higher rpm would of been detrimental due to the faster cycle/higher cylinder pressure and already higher temps

yeah race fuel is only more stable to a point and then even that will detonate with that much advance..sheez im still trying to get my head round where they decided 24 dgerees would be best lol

more pic's as and when the block comes out :D

on inspection of the pistons and head all seems ok, nothings melted and my head is ok :D

but that doesnt mean she'll be back on the road next week, my plans are still going ahead and as soon as the block is out i'll put her away in my garage for a year or so :chill:

theres a whole raft of info out there on ignition timing and ignition advance and retard without alex putting a load of info up

jams idiots guide to igniton

essentially the faster your engine spins the sooner you need to be creating combustion so that your creating the correct forces to push the piston down when its needed...if we use the figures alex gave for example. (ill use the normal ones not the gimp tastic ones ) at 3000 rpm you have an advance of 8 degrees. so 8 degrees before top dead centre. youll get a spark. bang, combustion happens piston goes down. repeat infinitum. and this is fine at about 3000 rpm. however if we ramp that up to 6000 rpm your piston will be travelling at twice the velocity and thus youll need to account for that. so 16 degrees before the piston reaches top dead centre the spark will happen. bang combustion piston goes down. however if you ran 16 degrees at 3000 rpm this would be detonating. because your spark is happening way to early and the combustion is actually taking place while the piston is still accelerating up and not when its about to go down. it puts massive strains on engine parts..resulting in anything from a holed piston but that is normally tied in with poor fuel delivery/ mix to things like bent rods, knackered bearings where the forces are fighting one another it really wont do an engine any favours. there are many factors that need to be taken into account with ignition timing. and something that warrants way more attention than ill give it at half one in the morning lol

hope that clears some of that up without alex having to add too much.

good news on the pistons and head terry...least thats 2 major components not shagged :D

Jam.

I wont be saying what runabout I've got just yet,but I will as soon as I have it sat at my house!

Just awaiting to hear back from the insurance as the Cossie will still be insured but out on a laid up policy and my runabout will have the fully effect if my 5 ncbs! :D

But I've gotta wait till the Cossie is tucked away before I can swap it to a laid up policy!
