Hey all i own a 1.6 16v si, im ready to make the jump to the 2.0 mondeo engine from my 1.6 16v, i was wondering if anyone knows of a mechanic with experience doing this? i live in suffolk so anyone within a 2 hour radius of ipswich would be great thanks

have you got all the conversion bits?

have you got a group of mates that are handy with a set of spanners and a weekend free? if your have a read of the guide its pretty easy to do if you take your time

if you were closer i'd of lent a hand

set aside a weekend. get a couple of mates round with a half decent set of spanners and sockets and a haynes book of lies and get cracking. ive ended up helping out with a few..some more voluntary than others. its not a difficult swap. its just labour intensive. im about 40 miles away from ipswich if you get massively stuck

Before I did mine I hadn't even changed a set of brake pads. I had help removing the drive shaft from the gear box and aligning the clutch but that was it. If you dont need your car for a week, and you can borrow something else give it a go.

im a complete novice too, so these words give me inspiration lol, do you need an engine crane?

engine crane is a must as are axle stands and a jack, 2 if you can get hold of another

i did my 2nd engine conversion with jam, we breezed it in a weekend, where as it took me and a mate of mine near on 3 weeks on and off when i 1st attempted it

all i can say is read the haynes manual and the links i put up really well and you'll be fine

if you get stuck we'll be here to help

anyone close by down south i'm always willing to come lend a hand so i'm sure we can work something out

Engine crane is the best option, however I have seen people 'drop' the engines out, basicly lifting the car up over the engine. Halfords do kits for like £30 or something silly which will have a jack and two axle stands, well worth buying as they will always come in handy anyway, not just for this project.

Engine hoists can be rented for like £40, or try and find someone you can borrow one off. Engines are heavy things, but you can lift it with other things (I've changed an engine with a fork lift before).

i will keep reading all the guides and hopefully it shouldnt be hard, the ones iv read go on about changing caskets, will i need to?

Unless something goes horribly wrong, you will not be needing any 'caskets'.

Its best to change the gaskets as a matter of course. Its also a good idea to put on a new water pump/ cam belt whilst you are at it. Although you are talking about another say £100 in parts, you will have a more reliable engine and avoid exspensive future costs if the water pump does fail.

Also think about changing the clutch/ you would probibly need a new one anyway.

thanks for all the posts guys thanks for the links onslack, only thing is i have looked at them before and the two detailed links dont work anymore :S, i think i will buy myself a cheap car to run around in and do this job with my mates, any ideas of the best place to get a engine hoist? also where do i start? lol are there any detailed guides? i have a haynes manual which is a start lol

Best place i'd look to hire a hoist from would be hss hire or look on ebay and see if you can get a good deal

i ended up just buying a hoist as i think i may need it again in the future and the price of hiring it twice is more than buying it once, lol
