hey all, new to site, have recently put engine in my SI, everytime I operate the handbrake, the ABS light comes on at the same time. However if I disconnect the ABS sensor this will come on all the time regardless of handbrake operation. is this normal? or not?


if not, any ideas as to what parts will be at fault??

and yes i have checked all connections etc after engine change

ABS was an option on MK3 fiestas. not a very good option as it was basically the belt drive rubbish they fitted to MK4 escorts.

was the light coming on with the handbrake before you did an engine swap?
Try having a look about on the net. there must be an MOT test routine for fiesta ABS...i.e igntion on light goes out after 5 secs will come back on if there is a fault.

personally the Belt drive ABS is very hit and miss. best place for that is in the bin. and plumb a std fiesta setup in there.

need to contact the original owner, until then i'll take it up to local garage, have it scanned for faults. its not a bother as it does not come on when driving, its just if it fails the MOT thats all. thanks so far.

if you ask an MOT test station they will be able to look it up for you as it will be on the computer system now. i.e if they put the reg in it will tell them what it has..and any special notes. i.e how to test the abs if its fitted. im pretty sure (95%) that system doesnt have a control unit to probe as its hydro-mechanical. it only senses the front wheel speed and any lock up from that belt drive system that runs off the drive shafts, and wont cut in until about 20mph...and cut out below that...making it virtually useless at low speed and on ice. the back is load sensed so has no correlation to wheel speed. and the electrical switches it does have are to put the warning light on for a broken belt. electronically its not tied into anything, like a modern electronic system.

if its not coming on when its moving and comes on with the handbrake id say thats right. almost along the lines of a bulb test. so you know the bulb works.

i have noticed that it does not cut in below 20mph and have not taken the time yet to test above this. and yes i checked it is belt driven off the shafts. the sensors i disconnected were situated on the belts, this caused the light to come on constant. pleased to hear its most likely a bulb test. as it does not come on with handbrake down when you first start car unlike the airbag, oil pressure etc.

i also have this sort of problem, when my handbrake is on my abs light come on and when i release the handbrake and pull off it goes??? and i have a bloody MOT very soon, hope this doesnt fail it, have you had any luck with finding out if its a problem to mot?

whent through no problem, just got a advisory on corroded brake lines, good to go.......

Don't all cars have a light which comes on with your handbrake?
