well, slight update. havent really done anything, but found something out. whilst changing the fuel filter, i decided to check the filler cap (cant be too careful!) and guess what i found? enough mayo to fill a jar of helmans. Really angry, as with no job, all my money was going to go on petrol to find jobs, and stuff for the move. now though, since i havent even started saving because i had rent to pay off, i have exactly £0.87, a car that needs fixing, and no income. happy days :( going to check with the dealer (my mate) if he took a look when he got it in, or did any compression checks. if not, then surely i must have some kind of comeback? selling a car that has a known problem like this as 'fine' cant be aloud, surely?

When I bought my 106 XSi as standard, it had tons of mayo in the cap and oil breather pipes after checking a few weeks down the line. SLightly shocking but hey.

Nice couple of boiling kettles later, jobs a good'un. Had a hardcore 6k more (I mean raping!) before the totally unrelated fuel filter gave up the goose. It's not always as bad as it could be. Depends on the cars living conditions and how far/often you drive it.

Sold as seen from private, but sounds like it's from a dealer? So who knows. Just be as nice as possible to them and lick their arses, unless they decide not to fix the problem if they don't have to, put your mean face on and take it from there (if you can take it anywhere)

Im sure the law states that if you sell more than 5 cars in a year, your classed as a trader and therfor have to offer a 30 day warrenty, it even stands if they sell there own private car, but im sure you've had it more than 30days, so if the HG has gone, it could have recently gone so would have been detected in any pre-purchase investigations. But as people have mentioned its common for oil to breath this time of year and cause mayo, just give it a good rape and it should go. :)
