where is it located in an si 1.6 16v
also how easy are these things to replace mine is playing up.

driving the car for the past week, starts on the button everytime no problems.
drove down to sandbanks beach last night then went to drive home and all i got was a loud click. the battery is brand new and wasnt flat. I had to bump start the car.

started car now juts out of curiosity and it started fine. tried another 4 times and started fine everytime. Im confused is this just a faulty connection maybe or is the starter on its way out. its booked in tuesday would it be able to be reconditioned or could it just be loose wires??

may be worth checking the wires where they connect to the starter motor, but sounds like a sticky starter solinoid, might be on the way out, not hard to change but worth doing it in propper Haynes manual style and disconnect the battery as otherwise the large cable is live and very close to the down pipe and can short out (make sure u got the radio code) most places do exchange starters anything between £55 -£75 plus a deposit untill you take your old one back

'tapping' the solenoid with hammer may cure a sticking solenoid on a starter for a while. it's located at the front of the engine, attaches to the gearbox and is behind the exhaust manifold. the bit on top with the wires going to it is the solenoid.

I have this same problem with my car to, sometimes will work perfectly other timeswill turn over once or twice then just go " click click click click click etc etc"

As jdfiesta said tap the solinoid with a hammer literally just tap!!

took te car into the garage and they couldnt find anything wrong with the car. the car started perfectly every time all day they tried and tested. What could be the problem here then as its happened twice now and has left me stranded. Im worried to drive the car as i have a feeling it will do the same thing. why havent the garage spotted a problem?

i know the feeling. was just gonna add a post on starter motors.

my mums shitty volvo 440 has spat it dummy out and wont turn over, battery fine, a few months old, good out put.

wiring ok.

so i went and got a starter from the breakers, broke my back fitting it (located behind the block by the bulkhead!)

started the car about 12 time with my mother watching. drove it. stopped. started etc.

left it overnight. the fucker wont turn over again. grrrrrrrrr?????????

are you just getting a click from the engine when turning the key as that is all i got on my car although problem seems to be ok at the moment fingers crossed!
