Side Exit Exhausts.. legal?... which side?


Don't worry this isnt for a Fiesta!


Right, so are side exit exhausts legal? - I am guessing so as I have seen cars, vans, trucks with them. But they would have been from factory.. so what about aftermarket?

If legal.. which side? does it matter? - I am guessing O/S so its not pointing towards pavements.. But.. I have seen plenty of vans and trucks with them on the N/S and both sides..

So I am unclear on the regulations on this, if any?

Anyone know?, cheers.

i've seen several cars with side exit exhausts but never paid much attention to which side it was on,

There's a rear wheel drive volvo that ground around southend with a side exit, but i dont think the car even goes to a garage to get its MOT lol

best bets would be to stop a traffic officer lol,
next time i get stopped i'll ask for ya (fingers crossed i wont get tugged to soon)

the gist i got was so long as its behind the front wheels and not crazy loud then you should be fine either side.
i'd be more bothered about the volume myself, as mines just failed for excessive exhaust noise, which in turn now means it's being broken for parts

My neighbours got an old Mustang we're in the process of doing up, and a couple of weeks ago we fitted 2 side exit exhausts, one either side So if it's illegal he's buggered

Does look pretty cool though

They're not connected yet, only fitted to the sides of the car. Unfortunately, it's going to be a ballache getting a downpipe made up to fit it so we've found. For a decent price at least. I'll get some pics tomorrow, the pipes we've angled so they face directly out from the car so there'll be some burnt ankles if it flames

a lad in our local car club had a pontiact firebird and he had exhast out both sides and on tick over that was just spitting flames out and as far as i know he had no trouble from the police and it was very very loud aswell

hi mate side exits are legal providing there in the noise restrictions level, me and my bro checked when he up side exit on his 770bhp alfacossie, although hes didnt quite stand the noise lol with a straight through

side exits are perfectly legal provided they dont stick out so as to cause harm to other road users. pedestrians etc. and are not deemed to create excessive noise. that would be down to the officer in question stopping you. or the MOT tester testing it.
due to the shorter length you may find its a bit droney on a motorway. unless you bung another silencer in there to cut the resonance down.

i asked a traffic cop for you and its pretty much what jam said, no legal shite about what side its on, just cant sick out further than the body work as per normal requirements for the back, as long as it passes a standard mot your fine!!
