well i put everything together turned it over for the first time and it wouldnt start just kept blowing the air inlet pipe off the maf (that isnt securely fastened due to the size of the 2 litre maf) i've got spark and fuel but its just not even trying

one thing i did notice is the inlet manifold was getting warm and the exhaust manifold was cold. I havent yet fitted the downpipe and unburnt fuel was dripping out of the exhaust manifold. upon inspection of the spark plugs there was also unburnt fuel on them too

i had the cambelt changed by a mechanic whilst the engine was out and i think he may have done it wrong. my theory is its opening the inlet valve when its sparking causing it to fire into into the inlet manifold and opening the outlet valves on a downstroke causing unburnt fuel to pass through to the exhaust

if im right how far out of time would it be to cause this and could it damage any valves?

i called the mechanic that did the cambelt to see if he would come out to check the timing again but he just fobbed me off :x

sounds like a good mechanic!

it's fairly easy to check your timing.

take top cam belt cover and rocker cover off,

turn bottom pulley clockwise until first notch (IIRC) lines up with raised part of sump.

check slots at back of cams and try and fit cam locking tool in them
if it's timed up fine it should slot in

sorry to hear this buddy, sounds like a top notch bloke :squint:

check here

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2545

should tell you how to time it up

its fairly easy to do, just turn it over by hand first(rachet on the crank pully) to make sure there is no valve and piston contact

Hi there,

I would say that sounds like it's 180 degrees out!!

And if I'm right in what I'm thinking, that would make sense with opening the inlet on exhaust stroke and vice versa!
You'll be glad to know that shouldn't damage any valves as it's just opening the wrong ones on the wrong stroke.... I think!!

Follow that guide attached above and you should be sorted, would definatly try and get a 5mm flat bar to lock the cams when the crank is at TDC, will make life so much easier!!

Paul

sounds soo odd!

only thing i can suggest if you've double and triple checked the timing and its all A-ok then itm might be time to call a mobile mechanic or someone like that

Are you sure you've got the right piston at TDC when you are checking the timing?

Paul
