Smooth bodykit into panels, without paint cracking? ideas?

Pickup arches have cracked where they were smoothed into the cars panels and painted.

I have to smooth them in like this due to having no archs to stick the kit to properly :lol:

But its slightly annoying to know the paint will crack after 6 months painting it again.... so does anyone have any ideas?

For the front arches I will be filling the gap between them and the wing at the bottom with expander foam, this will then stop them from flexing as much.. but the paint will most likely crack still :(

The only other way I could do it was to try and not smooth them in, but 1. it looks crap, and 2. the kit would probably fall off :lol:

Yea you really need to stop them moving about as much as possible, thats what makes the paint crack as you probably have guessed lol.

Fibreglassing them will probably be the best option! Strong too :D

I'll see what we can do when I refit them sometime next week before I start thinking about paint!

The bloody problem with cutting out the arches to fit mahooosive wheels... although it means I can fit some cossies (with proper tyres!) one day when I feel flush :lolz:

haha. If you have never done fibreglassing before, try it on something else first just for practice. Thats what i have always been told. And i told my friend that who made a custom parcel shelf which came out pretty damn good after a bit of practice.

But personally, i have never done fibreglassing before, only watched it be done by people who make custom boot installs and things like that.

Im sure there are websites about that will tell you how to get the best finish, quick google search and all will reveal!

Im sure I can handle the fiberglassing, ive got worse things to make yet! eg. escort arch liners, modded and fiberglassed up so they can still fit with 16's and lowered 60mm, and with no arch lips to connect them to. shall be amusing!

Thats what we use, its not that which is cracking. Its the paint which goes on top.


And although sikaflex is great stuff.. I have found it doesnt stick as good as people claim :insanity:

Thats great stuff.. but the problem being is the paint is cracking on top, because it is flexible.

I've found something better to use now anyway :)

As paul has said, he has agreed that the tigerseal has stuck the bodykit on amazingly, just the paint is cracking due to the flexiblility experienced

wow abit out of hand! i can fully understand what paul is saying as any bonding agent that is used which has a slight bit of movment in it is going to cause the paint to crack where the xr2i arches have been smoothed into the wings, sikaflex drys like rubber so will have movement in it, im guessing what paul is asking is if there is anything that dry's solid!

As said paul i think your best bet may be fiberglassing, possibly along the inside of the arch? or even see if you can use a more flexable paint along the arches?
