Doesn't really apply to older cars but most 2000 onwards it does:

Dear god how my wallet is empty, golf tdi pd goes wrong,

camshaft £70ish
8 followers £6ish each
cam belt kit £80 ish
battery £34ish
crank sensor £10ish
pd injector x1 £184

Luckily i get all parts from my work, but normal price that would of cost the best part of about £1200

Not having right oil has caused cam/followers/injector to go tits up, then might as well do belt kit. Needed a battery and crank sensor come up on fault codes.

Moral of the story, put the right oil in your car, or as in my case, if your buying a second hand car, make sure the services have had the right oil.

Injectors are run off the camshaft via rockers etc no distributor pump etc...
