search engine is your friend!!!!!

but, quick rundown

1.6 is easy for 2 ltre conversion
1.4 is easy for rs turbo conversion

depends which way you wish to take it yourself!

brakes upgrade cosworth 4x4 calipers are pretty much the cheapest and easiest!!!

If your looking to upgrade later on when insurance allows, a 1.6 is a better option as the zetec can be modified lots more to get more power. Also, with a 1.6, the conversion to 2.0 ltr is much much easier coz its just a straight swap coz they are both basically the same engine, but one is larger capacity.

The 1.6 is insurance group 8 and the 1.4 is insurance group 7 so for the extra cost of 1 group in insurance, you can have a car with lots more potential in the future

Oh, and welcome to the site by the way! :FSI:

In the wrong section mate.

But it all depends on insurance etc..as the 1.4 will obviously be cheaper, but of course not as fast as the 1.6 (75bhp/90bhp)

In terms of upgrades, again it depends what sort of thing you want to do, if you want a complete engine transplant then the 1.6 has an easy change to the 2.0 16v from a mondeo (135bhp-ish). But the 1.4 being a CVH engine, will be able able to house the RS Turbo engine, again producing about the same sort of power as the 2.0, but much easier to tune to a higher spec.

For the 2.0 ltr conversion, most ppl buy a mondeo ( they go for bout £300 - £400) and then you have everything you need to do the conversion. Alternatively, you can buy a 2.0 ltr zetec engine for about £100 ish but then you will have to buy the other various bits and pieces to get it running in your si.

You can turbo a zetec but i'm not sure bout the details im afraid. Another way is the ZVH engine which is a CVH head with a zetec bottom end (usually bored out to 2.1 ltr). This gives you what is effectively a turbo'ed zetec.

Get a 1.4 if you want to put rs turbo engine in as it wud be a straight swap and you would also have cheaper insurance untill you did the swap.

Hope this helps

Just a little note, cossie calipers wont fit under certain types of wheels (such as mine!) without some serious faffing about, so depending on wheels the st ones fit too :)

CVH is what the 1.4 Si uses

ZVH is when somebody uses a CVH head on a zetec bottom end, Usually take an RS Turbo and add a zetec bottom end (put simply)

both the 1.4 and 1.6 zetecs are pretty gutless so the best upgrade is replacement.

The 1.6 is easy to swap for the 2.0
The 1.4 is easy to swap for the 1.6 RS turbo engine

But its not the end of the world you can but either engine in either car.

2.0: great power in its standard form and should be relaiable and economical. Cheap to insure.

1.6 RS Turbo: great power standard, easier to tune for less money or bigger power, won't be as reliable or economical. More expensive to insure.

On the flip side getting a decent engine for a 2.0 should be cheap and easy (for for an automatic if poss) where getting the parts together for an RS Turbo conversion can have a premium and be harder to find.

Shouldn't be too hard to find one, but good condition ones are getting harder to find, may be worth a bit more travel.

Good luck finding one.

tuning a zetec for N/A (normal aspiration) is not a cheap option. past the usual exhaust/4 branch/decat/induction kit/chip this is where it gets expensive. cams. its upto you. new or reground. factor in new lifters and adjustable pulleys at this stage. then the next restriction is the inlet. throttle body injection is preferred as it means you can still run a cat converter for emissions purposes. as legally it will need to be there. sidedraught carbs are okay but there are different part numbers for webbers not sure about dellorto's, the ones for the zetec have a different amount of progression holes. i think std is 3 and the others have 5 or it may be 7 im not too sure i never went massively into carbs as i was intent on using throttle bodies. after that its headwork. pistons. steel rods...the list can be endless so its how much you wanna spend/ can spend/ your insurance company wil let you do.

as for turbo. to be honest this can be done more cheaply than the N/A but its down to what you want to be honest. there are people that have done budget builds for about a grand/1500 quid ish using a decomp plate and adapted bits. the turbo route is alot more popular as pound for pound you will get more power out of it.

hope that helps in your decision on what to do zetec wise.

Jam.
