i am currently driving a 1.4 si and want to change the engine to a bigger one, any idea what would be fit in and be a sensible upgrade.

1.6 cvh form an XR2i, 115bhp of all out top end thrash, and tunning parts a plenty, you can get a fast road cam kit for around £300. i nice step up from a 1.4 and not much work to fit a rst lump when you want more power again.
id fit the 1.6, get a stage 3 head and a fast road/rally cam and fit a set of 42dcnf's, good for around 140-150ish bhp and lots of revy fun

Which '2i did you drive? Mine cried if it went above 5k rpm and had more mid-range grunt than top end thrash. It's a decent torquey 8v engine which you could pick up for very little. Someone was welcome to mine for free if they're come round for it! Should get the whole lot for £100 easy. At 19 (I presume) it's not a bad engine to put in it. And it's 110bhp just so you know :halo:

I've got the 1.4 and it is stuttering at around 4k rpm, so I've decided to do the car up starting at the engine, not to bothered about insurance, want something in it that revs right up but puts the power down on the road, would a newer st engine sit in (with work)or should i get the 1.6 and tune it

st engine proberly would fit but with a hell of alot of work and money to get in! as said the 1.6 xr2i engine would drop strate in and so would the fiesta 1.6 rs turbo engine (133 bhp) ;)

But you could get a lightened/balanced flywheel. That'd make it rev better surely??

And if you ain't worried about insurance, then you ain't worried about cash so go for a lightened and balanced crank too for extra revvyness (Is that a word??!?!?)

yeah but 8v cvhs generally don't like being revved to much, as due to poor head lubrication and oil pump they will get the famous "tap tap tap" death rattle

i once drove a mk2 xr2 with a mk3 xr2i engine and it loved to rev, must have been a rare example? a friends 1.8 non turbo diesel would rev higher than my old 1.3 hcs, but the hcs is probally the worse engine even made, who thought making a kent engine shorter aand increasing the stroke would make a good engine?

id go for the 1.6 xr engine, the 1.6 zetec is very hard to tune, the 2.0 is in alot of fiestas, the rst is cool. why not go for a na zvh, fast ford did a feature on one not long back and that was on a stage 3 head and piper fast road cam and some jenvey itbs and it was putting out 178bhp and around 170-180 tourque i think, might be exaggerating the tourque but it was very high. open the bonnet and see a cvh head and some massive carbs (you've go to go for the carbs) and have the strong bottom end of the zetec engine with the near square bore to stroke ratio (good for high rpms). with a 2.0 bottom end you could go for DCO/SP 50s, ive heard a pinto through 50s, much louder than the lotus contina on jenvey itbs that was also going around the track.

my 1.4 is a pretty lazy engine! deffo no power after 5300rpm! lol and it screams like hell at tha much revs!

i dun think its as easy as it sounds 2 drop an xr2i 1.6 or RST lump in thou, as those engines are from mk3 fiestas, not 3.5! so apparently the loom is different and it doesnt have the PATS system!

so i presume u wud have 2 swap the loom,ECU and engine over! or wud it be possible to run the 1.6 engine from the 1.4 ECU, possibly using the 1.4 injectors,MAF etc?????

i need to find out a lot about this conversion as i really want to do this sumtime as my 1.4 is getting close 2 98k! how long do CVH engines last btw??

3.5 are external pats, so the 1.4 loom should work just disconnect the pats module as it isnt needed. its not a massive job to change the loom, if you were commited to fitting the 1.6 or rst engine then you could do the swap in a long weekend with a few mates.
