Righty first of all you can talk mechanical mumbo to me and i will understand you

My little 1600 zetec is having a few bits done to it in the next two weeks.

First of all i will be aquiring some 115bhp spec cams, Throttlebody, Mass air flow, and injectors.

The questions being is - How much will i notice the difference by doing this to the 1.6 silvertop?.
In all honesty i have only recently started gathering info about the zetec engines as ive got one now.

Never really dealed with tuning them ect. Just the routine maintainance.

I dont want to just stick a 2.0l in it. Im not one of these expecting amazing bhp/torque gains! But knowing full well with all the 115 break running stuff it will happily touch between the 110 and 120 mark (correct me if im wrong) maybe more after a remap/chip. ive seen a 1600 touch 134 with all that done to it, along with a decat ect.

I dont want crazy power, just want a quick car and be happy to say " yeah mate its a 1600"

Has anyone done all this to thier 1.6 zetec? Or can shed any light.

Cheers

Matt

Do the 115 spec cams fit?

With any of them mods you are better off with a superchip live mapped for your ford ecu, or go aftermarket ecu or it will run like a sack.. specially if you use a different maf and tb on your standard ecu

nobody has really really tryed to get loads of power out of a 1.6, the only one I know of is Jonosi, as his 1.6 is a zetec turbo :)

i thought that because the valves are small at 22mm this restricts power possbilities?

i look into tuning my 1.6 but it was coming out at silly prices, the valves are really small as are the ports(as said above), so to get over 110bhp n/a you have to have some pretty major headwork done. so the 134bhp from a 1600 with the mods you said is probally a bit over estimated, plus to tune a 1.6 you will loose all your tourque. the 2.0 route is just so much easier if you want around 130bhp, all you need is the 2.0 maf, throttle body and ECU and the engine itself. or why not just fit a 1800, rs1800 spec is 130 bhp.
but if you want to stick with a 1.6, a decent exhaust and panel filter, zetecs dont like cone filters as i have found out by switching back to the airbox, a 2.0 throttle body and a good service and a 1.6 will still keep up with most small hatches. superchips also help alot with throttle resoponse and iron out the zetec flat spot.
hope this helps

well if the 1.8/2.0ltr cams dont fit into the 1.6 then that would include the 115spec cams also.

although fair play for someone looking into tuning the lil engine :)

anyone put TBs on one before to see the outcomes??!

or supercharge it, would give it abit extra poke!

hmmm, fair does.

Seems fair to say its alot easyer to do than farting around with the 1.6. If the head is the restriction then that would be alot of work and money to get it ported and everything. I was just pondering with ideas thats all.

But now ive seen the light i think i may just go 2.0l eventually.

Thanks anyway guys for topping up my knowledge on zetecs

1.8 130 spec isnt too bad either, doesnt have as much low down torque as the 2l but some people say that they rev better, cant say myself as ive only ever had a 130 1.8 not a 2l, as my 2l in escort is an RS engine, do remember having a 1.6 zetec though and it was pants :(
may be worth you thinking about the 1.8, will drop straight in no messing about and then its a case of obtaining the 130 spec stuff for it.

i think nobody has taken the 1.6 in n/a form to the extreme because ultimately it's not worth it. if you have that money to spend on a fiesta for an extra 30bhp, then you might as well buy a saph cossie, or 300bhp frst.

i think also people don't spend a lot on there 2.0's, as like me, i'd love an extra 20bhp in the 1.4 106, but doing so would cost the best part of 1k when you include the remap price. and that's worth more than the car, and will barely add value to it.

So an 1800 would fit in with no messing around?

As when you do a 2.0l conversion you have to change the sump to a 1.8 one and change the inlet manifold and water pump ect ect...

So what 1.8 would be ideal? The gti engine? Along with 2.0l cams and stuff?

Ideally would anyone be able to give me a list of what engines are in what car?

cheers

Any of the 1.8 Zetec XR2i Fiestas will fit straight in, but they were 115spec, so just need to fit RS1800/2.0ltr cams (they are the same cams) Inlet/TB

RS1800 130 spec engine will drop straight in

Escort Gti will drop straight in... but there was both 115spec and 130spec

2.0ltr just means swapping the sump and a few other bits about, which isnt that hard either. So if you get hold of a 2.0ltr you can use all the bits of your 1.6 engine anyway :)

Inlet manifolds.. SO and HO, 1.6 is SO and ideally use HO (from the RS1800) on any of the 1.8 or 2.0ltr engines

i spent plenty of time effort and money trying to squeeze every extra fraction of a horsepower outta my 1.6 si

air filter + cold intake
kent cams
magnex de-cat
ashley exhaust system (a catback but no cat lol)
Power Chips ,Piggy back map chip (made a BIG of difference fitted after the cams)
2.0 throttle body + maf housing
fse fuel pressure regulator (running various pressure settings)
EGR removal
many various plug gap settings (40thou worked best i think)
advance retard timing
8mm silicon leads
taking spare wheel off lol
super unleaded + octane boost
i'm pretty sure it only got upto 103bhp (on a cold day) well it was a zetec s beater what are they ?99bhp?
wish i'd got it on the rolling road before i dropped the rs1800 lump in

the only thing i didnt get done was head work due to the valves being the size of chocolate buttons :P

::edit:: i put air filter twice i only had 1 air filter lol

whats the insurance like for an RS1800 engined fiesta?
pretty sure it'll be more than a 2.0 converted one.

But saying that, my pickup is only £60 more than the RS1800 was, and thats mainly charges to change the policy

i got 95bhp with ported & polished head, chip, induction/exhaust...
although this figure is ok when you take into consideration the head isn't going to make a lot of difference without cams or proper remap to cater for it.
the tiny valves are the biggest problem for the N/A route (but probably one of the key features for the Forced induction route).
sinces my 95bhp RR i have cammed it and put a ported and polished TB on it. To be fair its the biggest gain i had recieved on the car and would guess it would make arond 102/103bhp.
unfortunately since then i've developed an airleak and exhaust blow- not to mention my induction cone being in abit of a state (which would probably have bad affects on my MAF) and is therefor abit down on power.

to cut to the chase if you don't want to do the more financialy suitable 2.0 conversion your best bet are a good set of Cams and a proper remap. Downside is the cost would be near a grand for that working all doing/buying. should see 110bhp though with usual inlet/outlet modifications.

i would advise putting a 2.0 in (or even getting a garage to do it for £400-£600), the reason i didn't was because i found bargins - the head for example was £50 off ebay. i also fitted all my modifications (Except cams) myself to save on the pennies.

anyway bit of a ramble but i've been offline 3 Months needed to run the keyboard in abit ( )
