I was driving down the road the other day like normal, pulled away, went from 1st to 2nd, then tried putting it into 3rd, and it wouldnt go over the middle bit - its like something is blocking it.

Like this.. the red line represents where its being blocked.

So now, i only have 1st and 2nd gear. I thought it might just be the gear linkage under the car, but its not because i disconnected it, moved the gearstick a full 360 degrees in the car, and to a pair of pliers to try and change gear from underneith.. but it wasnt budging as you can see in this vid.



So its deffo something inside the gearbox, i was thinking it could be this? The syncro ring for 3rd, 4th, 5th gear (see pic). But then again, if its not going past that place on the pic above, and i cant change gear while the car isnt running, could it be something on the selector mechanism?

sounds like a diff problem possibility the diff has collapsed or the gear box plunger that hold the gears in line

But the car is still drivable but only in 1st and 2nd. No noise when changing into 1st or 2nd. It just doesnt want to go past that point as in pic.

the box is knackered then stick another in sounds liek the selector has gone

A diff problem>? Sorry, but, do you actually know where the diff is?!

Something is wedged somewhere along the line or selector forks are totally fooked i would have thought.

Can you get into gears while the engine is off?

Happened to me a few years back, it freed up but i didnt trust it so changed the box anyway.

Nah i cant get into the gears while the engine is off, its not going past the point on the red line of that pic up the top ^.

You could try all day to get it past that point but would prob end up snapping the gear stick before getting it in.

considering how little it costs to get a second hand gearbox and how relatively simple it is to change it, i'd just get a s/hand box fitted.

Selector fork retaining clips have probably been spat out, thus stopping the selector fork from rising enough to go into other gears. Happened to my Pulsar gearbox. :) It's a lot easier when you see the internals.

I doubt it's the syncro ring on it's own, but may have some damage to it which wouldn't have helped. :)

As JD said though, just get another box, hardly the rarest thing to find and not worth the cost of getting it fixed. Mine cost £120 for new clips and syncro replaced (I got the syncro for nothing though otherwise it would've been a few hundred quid from Nissan)!
