Just a thought as it seems several members have been getting some very nice bigger/faster cars.

I have to admit I have gave up on the idea on my last cars have been for reliablity/newness/fuel comsumption, don't get me wrong I haven't got anything slower but I am starting to feel I am the only one taking the more sensible path.

People who don't know my last few cars are as follows:
2.0 Fiesta
Saxo VTS- Like the fiesta but more reliable
C2 VTS - Like the Saxo but cheaper to insure/fuel

As far as car cost and insurance goes I could afford other things but right now it just doesn't interest me.

yeah i see what you mean, the more prices rise i am being put off a faster car. I dont drive fast anyway, and my current car fits what i need :)

I've always wanted an Rs turbo, but the more i drive the xr3i, the less i want one  :|

i did take a less sensible route yes

my fex never let me down in the 3yrs i owned her, but the way i looked at it when i was looking to get my cossie was.. a) i dont drink b) i dont smoke c) i dont go out d) i'm a boring knobber... sense a pattern here?

i knew fuel bill's would go up, i knew my insurance for the time being would go up(it cheaper to insure a 300bhp saph than it was for me fez :? ) and i knew the car would cost a fair whack and i know if it goes wrong its going to cost me ALOT!

i'm not planning to up the power on the cossie( famous last words? :halo: )i plan to make it more reliable, as they can be as reliable as any other fast car if they are looked after properly

but i knew what i was getting into before i bought mine, just yet to experience the wallet raping yet :lolz:

..... but then in my eyes, for you to go and buy a newish car like a C2 is a financial no no. Other than the fact that something that small neither appeals to me, nor is it practical enough for my needs, buts its a depriciation nightmare, and doesn't represent terrific value-for-money; to name but a few reasons.

I look for several things in a car, speed is not the main one.......and never has been!!!!

and yeah i know what you mean, i have no intention of buying a "new" or newish" car (at this point in time)

Speed is nothing to me

I rarely drive fast :red: so speed is fubar all!

I like the car itself. I happen to really like mk4 escorts hence my xr3i. I would not drive an rs turbo any differently to my car, it would just cost me more in petrol/maybe fixing it

As i have been paying a mortgage since i was 18  i have had to appreciate i cant get what i want, and have wanted either an FSI (in the past, althought currently i would like to experience a 2.0 fiesta) or an RST, just current situation does not allow that.

When my loan is paid off, i can maybe live a little easier, but i have near enough on £1000 or overdraft to clear first

I know you only live once, and there are plently of things i have wanted to do, but i haven't been able to

i had a big think on the way home from fitp(yes it hurt), then a few weeks later alex(boost mad) cemented the idea in my head

i have wanted one for about a year+ now, not because they are fast or can be made to be fast, but i just wanted one

i could of settled and gone jap :hsugh: and had less to worry about reliablilty wise

as it is i hardly used my fez, the odd trip here and there, the only other major driving i do is too see becks

too me in some round about way it made sense, as i was going to spend £xxxx on my fez to ZT it, but i wont ever get that money back

but with the cossie its sort of an investment in a way, if i can keep mine in good condition i can only(well hopefully) see its value going up :D

Im getting my fix while i can, before;

A. Fuel gets so expensive you have no option but to buy a car that does 60mpg
B. I settle down and have to start paying mortgage etc

I can see my next car being something sensible/family Orientated. :frown:

Its going to be an interesting one is this!!

Some good healthy debate about car cost feasibility, by a group of car enthusiasts, esspecially as most in general remain in, or are initially of, small car origin!!

hold fire on the kids! (that is one thing that genuinely worries me!) but the mortgage is a crippler

I got paid last friday, and had a wad of 8 £50s in my hand for 2 whole mins   then put the money in my mums bank for the mortgage, plus £62 car insurance and the day after £160 on loan and i was like

Yeah i am gutted in a way, my mates have faster cars, and i have an expensive house

My mates:

1: Mr2
2: Saph Cossie/Rs500 (at least looking for one) (he works at TOTD, and is better off then most of us)
3: Civic Jordan
4: S1 RST
5: Civic VTi
6: M3

etc

but they all live with parent(s)

Me and my best mate were talking last night, and he said why dont i take the plunge and get a 2.0 fiesta, but i can see it happening.....

I have to say i agree with Matt, getting a faster or more expensive car now while you are young and can afford it ... time seems to be flying by and in like 20mths i'll be 25 :| scary stuff, but i want a house sooner rather than later, so before all that happens and im living with the 'rents why not make the most of it ;)

I am a fan of older cars, and imo if you find a decent and well looked after one then whatever the make they can be reliable. I just feel like newer cars dont have the same character as an older car, although sometimes i do think it would be nice not to have that squeaky window or rattling seat!

I guess it also depends on your living style and situation ... if you only pootle about and work is just down the road why not have a car thats silly on petrol, its not like you go very far! And driving can be more of a hobby than an essential. Whereas if you have to travel alot for work, or friends .. or boyfriends   then maybe you need something better on fuel or with a very high reliability.

Thats my opinion anyways :insanity:

PS. im not saying i want a bigger car, maybe a little faster would be good, but since passing my test nearly 6yrs ago all i have driven is fiestas, guess id just like a change for abit ;) .... new car coming Feb 09 :D

i'm also a fan of older cars becks :) and agree on your comments.

I hope to experience a faster trubo car before to long

I haven't said it to mum and dad, but i was gutted when they went to france

They were no longer there to talk to, (face to face) i knew there and then that things changed and i had to grow up, and fast :) I knew the plans of an Rs turbo at 19 were not going to happen

I drive a mile to work :red:  so am planning on getting a bike or some description just to get to work and use the car for collge and hobby 8-)

It does seem to be an interesting debate, there is no right or wrong answers here.

The point about the C2 (and likewise) be a depreciation nightmare, that is the reason I bought it (wait for it)

A badly depreciating car can offer very good value in the used market, I got mine for £6.5k with just over 12k on the clocks, yes it will still depreciate, but the worst of it is already done by the previous owner. So for a car with a lot of miles left, decent amount of power, usual mod cons and stability control. Also very cheap to insure and run. So newer cars can offer good value, brand new... probably not.

Indeed. Far better value than new, but still not sufficient for me to consider it.

The reason I loooove Omegas is for their all round ability (remembering that they are a BMW 5-series underneath :D ), pease of mind knowing its german engineering having bolted together there, and mega value due to the Vauxhall badge.

I've got 3, all with the same engine, all different specs, all with differing suspension, and all for different purposes.

Can cost as little as a good mk3 fez, with far more capabilities under its belt!!

personal choice at the end of the day :)

some of you might think my car is a steaming pile   while others may like it also :D but the fact i like it is the main thing for me :)

Unlike most people, the cars i have been getting have been getting gradually older  rather then newer :look:
