Hey all.

I've read the modification guide on this website (which is the best!) and decided to take the time to modify a 1.4/1.6 Si into a more powerful 1.8 litre version.

My goals are to produce 120 BHP and 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds or less. Realistic?

I have, however, a few questions, more for people in the know. I'm just doing some field research before I go head on into it and find I've overlooked something.

First of, which is a better option for transforming in a 1.8 litre, the 8v or the 16v Si?

Secondly, will the ECU need to be changed for a 1.8 engine one (like an Escord GTi ECU for example.) And if so, it it actually possible to do this part?

Thirdly, I know the suspension on the 16v model Si if better, but would it be worth while putting 20mm lowered springs on, as a full suspension kit is a bit out of my price range. And 20mm wouldn't put too much strain on the standard shocks.

Forth, I read on the guide that Escort RS2000 brakes would fit straight on, but these, I feel, would be hard to get hold of, so I was wondering if I could take the disc, calipers and pads from an Escort GTi instead? And perhaps the rear drums too..?

Fith, and final, what's a realistic budget for this all, if I get reasonable condition gear?

Thanks for the time, and sorry to go on. If I do this project (I'm only here till March... :look: ) I may donate to the website, as it'll have been a great help. Cheers guys and girls.

why not just drop a 2 litre in?

that time should be do-able with a 1.8, with high 7 do-able with a 2litre, if im wrong im sure i'll be corrected

if you have a 1.4 the easiest route to take is whacking a RST engine in and going for an easy 150bhp+. 1.8's and 2.0's for the 1.6's. I think it's just to do with the engine mountings of each model? unless you dont mind a bit of fabrication in the engine bay when it's bare.

if you uprate your discs and pads to something decent (race spec), you wont need new callipers or a new brake setup, plus the rear drums you have will be fine, people disagree on wether rear drums or rear brakes make any actual difference at the end of the day on a money/output scale.

it's probably better to uprate your dampers instead of your springs too as they'll be more tired.

this is all my thoughts though

How come you're only here until March!? :look:

If you want a 1.8 setup I have my full RS1800 engine setup with rare ecu and maf sensor.
Also comes with ashley racing 4-2-1 manifold/decat

Think all you would need was some zetec engine mounts and zetec wiring loom and your away ;)

This had 128bhp at 6100 revs and is an excellent engine :)

Yes, I am going in the Forces in March, lol. That's one of the reasons I'm choosing a 1.8 over a 2 litre engine. Basically, the 2 litre in standard spec and trim will produce around 135 bhp (depending on condition) and this, in the Si, means a lot of modifying to other components to make sure they can handle the power.

I'm choosing a 1.8 for many reasons, main ones being;

-Easier conversion, gearbox isn't essential to change.
-Less modifying to parts as then should be able to handle the increase power (it's a 33.3% increase)
-Insurance is cheaper, as is tax.

My theroy is that taking the brakes, engine, lume and manifold from an Escort GTi, I can fit them straight into an SI within a month and have it running on the roads.

Am I just being unrealistic, or is it possible? Remember, I'm a novice when it comes to these things...

fitting a 2.0 to a 1.6 requires no modifying of parts, only some to be swapped over all te components on the car will handle the increase on power quite happily ;)

gearboxes bolt straight on, same with clutches and fly wheels(use the 1.6 one)

have a read of the 2.0 fitting guide in the guides section, i think you'll be pleasantly surprised ;)

i think the 1.8 and 2.0 are in the same tax bracket i could be wrong tho?

use a 2.0 ecu and maf( correct one of 3 that can be used) and you wont need to swap looms or anything over

jam and i had becks Si up and running after her 2.0 conversion within a weekend

we are all here to help and advise you, hope that all helps :D

Hmm, what about buying a Fiesta RS1800 (K Reg) and taking the engine out of that and replacing it with the 2.0 litre Mondeo lump? Would that work?

would work exactly the same as it would for an Si, but i think you'd have issues with the ecu and wiring as early RS1800 had external edis and the Si's have internal

which is why only 3 ecu's from 2.0 mondeo's can work with the Si!

but.. iirc later RS1800's came with internal edis so it might me possible that the K reg has internal edis but i cant be 100% sure, i'm sure someone who know's a bit more about RS1800's will be able to help you out

you could do a engine bay wiring loom swap on the RS1800, use a 16v Si engine loom then you can use a 2.0 ecu job done then :D

but basically any fiesta with a 16v zetec engine be it a 1.6 or 1.8 can accept the 2.0 engine

hope that makes some sense :red:

im running 130 spec 1.8 in my si, is very simple, to do and i havnet had any handling issues with it either, just took buggerd 1.6 out and fitted 1.8 that was in my escort before was simple.
unsure about the hopefull 0-60 time though fella, my escort mk4 only pulled 7.65 at ford fair and thats 150bhp, and definatly a lot quicker than my fiesta!
