Fiesta-Si.com • View topic - would you be happy with this rust repair job?
Right....well on my car here are some specil front mudguard thingys as standard....and over the years....the N/S one has worn into the paintwor and caused it to start rusting.....so I made an attempt at repairing it(bear in mind this is my first ever repair) and becaus eof the lacquer not sticing properly i managed to get an ever so slight line in it.....i just wanna know what you guys think of it.
unless the water can flow in between that crack and easily out at the bottom it will only rust again so make sure it flows easily! hence why people bond on the RST kits as other wise its just a water trap. good looking repair though!

yeah, personally i wouldnt bond a mudgaurd on but yo have to think its going to get covertd in mud obviously and water so just grab the hose and spray it down in between the guard and the mudflap and see if all th water comes out when you stop. if it does then good job no problem, if it sdoesnt id put some tiny washers in between the mudguard and the body just to give that 1mm clerance for it to escape easily. thats why ERST arches and FRST arches are always buggerd cz it rains, and the water just chills out in between the two untill its shaken off during driving. so if you bond it then it cant really sit in there if its bonded all the way to the top but if you bonded on mudguards it wouldnt hold too well so just space em a tiny tiny bit if the water doesnt flow easily. but dont use massive washers or loads of mud will get stuck in there, and mud will rot it quicker than water on its own. just when you wash your car just make sure you give it a good blast in the mudguard area in the winter to get its all out. its a lose lose situation really as without em youll get stonechips and it will rust but with them you get a water trap mudguards are good i got em on the escort because of stone chips but just make sure you get as little water trapped in there as you can

Ok mate cheers....i reckon i'll have to keep giving it a good spray in there to get out the mud and salty rainwater(i think thats what causes rust more than normal tap/hose water :S)
yeah salt from road gritting in the winter hate them gritters sometimes! i know they are there to make the roads safer but just feeling like screaming when they drive past and spray your whole car in grit! another thing to look out for is the sills where they have been jacked up wrongly with a trolley jack, if they are bent it traps water aswell so just bend it straight again with a pair of mole grips and its all good again

oooh more advice lol.....i think mine are all straight.....just the paint has cracked off them from where i've been using the scissor jack......I need to get myself a trolley jack....and learn where to jack it up if i wanna use axle stands after its up???
Then i shall wire brush and underseal the sill points....then leave them alone
just dont spray underseal in the cracks where the parts of the sills meet, spray along em just not into em or you will just create another water trap
and go buy a trolley jack! but use a small block of wood on top if jacking on the sills as this will stop em bending, rule of thumb tho, dont jack it up on the sills unless you have to

where should i jack it with the trolley jack before i shuv it on axle stands?
and about these cracks...do you mean the little holes for the water to drain out of..... can probably get some photos then you can show me where i need to be undersealing...oh and i'll be brushing it on, not spraying
ok well doing this is a bit anal but there is reason why my 18yr old escort has less rust on it than most 18yr old cars! if you look at the sills from underneath its not just one bit of metal its 2 or 3 yo uhave an outer sill (the bit you can see from side on) and inner sill then chassis for example. these all join down and create the 10mm bit of metal you see sticking out from under the car if it doesnt have side skirts on it. just paint/spray it on as you normally would and wait for it to dry all lovely ect ect then take stainley blade and run it in between the the layers of metal so to speak. some people do it some people dont, its like if you have a water leak and your carpets are soaking, most people will fix the leak then dry it up with paper towel then leave the heaters on in the car for a few hours with the windows open. il find the lowest points in the floor drill a 2mm hole in it through the carpet, then put the heaters on ect when its stopped draining. then finally seal the hole up from underneath in a few days time. im anal though when it comes to cars i cant help it, its in my nature and i got it from watching my dad restore 3 oldskool cadilacs when i was a kid, you dont have to be as anal as me lol
not that ive spent much time jacking up fiestas so there is probably a better place to jack em up on but id jack it up on the chassis mounting point of one of the lower arms then put the axle stand under the chassis rail. it will say in your haynes manual exactly where is best though

the idea of the hole is its a quick way to get the bulk of the water out thats trapped between the carpet and the floor, who wants to leave their car running for hours with the heaters on to dry it all? after all the carpet may feel dry but underneath it its not going to be.
and what car is it?
