I just had exactly the same problem when fitting my Ashley manifold, i had a new BOSCH 25909 Starter motor on it and the manifold hit it by a good 20mm! i went to a scrap yard with my Bosch one and rumaged through their pile looking for one with the same flange dimensions but shorter, i ended up with what i think is a AC Delco one but it didnt have a name on it just made in Italy and was ment to be off a Zetec 1800 escort. i think there are possibly 3 different makes of starters standard to the front wheel drive ZETEC engine and all being different sizes, picture of the two starters and how they did/did not fit.
Hope it helps.

to big BOSCH starter couldnt fit manifold

the two BOSCH and i think AC Delco side by side, with the smaller one fitted the manifold cleared ok (But still hit the breather and cross member :banghead: )

Yeah thats my problem mate i just need a smaller started motor
but so im going down the scrappy today see if i can find one.

out of interest Will does your car still start an idle perfect?
guy i got exhaust off was using an rs turbo starter motor
but had starting problems so i don't really want to buy an rs
starter motor if the car wont run properly.

mine starts and idle's fine, think i was lucky though as the started i picked up seemed to have recently been refurbed by the sticker on it and got it for £20.
if the starter is a decent one should be ok but if you can get a 1800 zetec one all the better.

Just court the guy at the scrappy before he was locking up,
So were going to look tomorrow around a few cars but
he said he has 1.6 escort starter but wont that be the same as the 1.6 si?

So starter motors which should fit are zetec 1800?

Thanks for all the help mate :)

as there seems to be about 3 different types of starter for the zetec you may be able to get a shorter 1600 one which will fit. you really need to meassure the centre distance between the bolt hole centres (mine are 66mm), diameter of the inner flange (mine is 76mm) and the throw of the starter gear from the mounting face (28mm) to be sure it fits. alternatively cut a template out of paper of the face of the starter flange to compare.
A good scrap yard should be able to indicate what is the same fixings or alternatively if they are not of a shelf, remove a zetec one from the gearbox which you think will fit and try yours in the hole to check.
