Towing weight ...

Im probs being really dumb, but can someone please explain the difference between a braked and unbraked towing weight for a vehicle?

For example VW Golf 1.9DL : Braked towing weight - 850kg
Unbraked towing weight - 500kg

I believe its something to do with if the trailer has brakes on or not, so if it don't then you can only tow upto 500kg but if it does than you can tow upto 850kg. :)

That is indeed the case.

Trailers have to undergo annual road safety checks like any compliant vehicle.
An MOT for trailers if you will.

This is to ensure that it does what its supposed to.....as you can see with the Golf there, there's a big difference between its B and UB towing capabilities. You don't want to be pulling a 850kg trailer with brakes that don't work :insanity:

Ah thats okay for me to tow some things of scrap with a fiesta then :lol:

Although I should get it done so I can collect cars, as I'd need to use a big 4x4 or van to be able to tow a trailer with a car on legally, which therefore would be over 3.5tons.. bugger :rolleyes:
